So, what do we have to say on this topic? Do you really think that makeup is overrated? On the one hand, it seems that the makeup business exploded in the last couple of years, and more and more brands are finding their way to the hearts of their customers. On the other hand, there are plenty of people who actually stopped using makeup as they are trying to be healthier and live a more sustainable, closer-to-nature life. Be that as it may, there are lovers of makeup artistry among us, and yes, some of us will definitely continue using makeup, but of course, while paying attention to the ingredients and the brands. But what this new day and age has also brought is the fact that it’s easier than ever to debunk certain makeup myths. What are those myths, and can we debunk each and every one? How do we know what is good and what is not? Take a look:
#1 Makeup damages your skin
Are we living in the past or under a rock? Until when will this be a common myth? Anyhow, yes, this was true a decade ago when people were not so conscious about the ingredients that should be put into makeup products. Luckily, this new day and age and these technological advances have made it easier for us to actually know what to look for in a certain product. This is why it is safe to say that makeup does not always damage your skin. For example, there are many powders and primers with SPF, which means that your face will always be protected from the Sun (some will say that it will not be protected enough, but it is definitely a starting point). The trick here is to know what to look for and what things on the ingredients label you need to pay attention to. In order not to damage your skin with any kind of makeup though, it’s important to wash it carefully before going to sleep.
Debunked? Yes.
#2 Eyeliner on the waterline makes your eyes smaller
This is also something that greatly depends on the person who is wearing the makeup. Even though it is generally true that putting eyeliner on your waterline will make your eyes appear smaller, it all depends on the color of eye shadow that you will use. If you are going to use darker colors, then this myth is definitely true. However, you can also find great palettes from amazing brands that can help you create a very colorful look. For example, you can find perfect makeup online in Australia and get one of their colorful palettes (such as the CheekyBit Rise + Pop Palette) that is not only high-quality but also very bright, and this is exactly what kind of eyeshadow matches well with the eyeliner on the waterline of your eye. If you are giving your eye a frame, then make sure that your eyelids are bright and colorful.
Debunked? Kinda.
#3 Powder can deal with oily skin
Many people trust this, and apply powder on their oily skin hoping that it will make everything great. However, this is something that isn’t always true – if you have oily skin, it will need much more than a good powder to make it go away. In order to keep the oil from your skin in the best possible way is to wear a primer on your skin before you apply your makeup.
Debunked? Not really.
#4 Match the foundation with your wrist
This is a piece of advice that many people give – to always match the color of your wrist with the color of the foundation you will put on your face. However, if you think about it carefully, your wrist is always a bit darker than your actual face, so this is not always a good idea. You can always swatch face products on your wrist as yes – the color might be very similar to the color of your face, but bear in mind that it is not the same.
Debunked? Yes.
As you can see, there are plenty of myths. Here we covered four, but there are probably at least 50 more, that you will have to take care of by yourselves, or simply wait for our next Makeup Mythbusters post. For the time being, focus on these four and try to think logically about anything else you might want to know.
I love makeup. This is an informative article and I agree with all of the conclusions.
