Grandma’s Apple Crisp Pie Recipe

September 12, 2019 by Classystaff

Twenty-Five years ago my Grandmother taught me how to make her homemade Apple Crisp Pie. It’s a combination of your traditional apple pie mixed with a delicious apple crisp topping. You can use store-bought crusts or make your own. Personally, I like to make my own crust because we like it thick and and well, it just tastes better.

You can use store-bought canned pie filling (to save time) or use your own that you make from scratch. I make my own using freshly sliced apples or I’ll pop open a jar of my own (home canned) apple pie filling and use that.

Grandma’s Apple Crisp Pie Recipe

Pie Ingredients:

1 unbaked pie crust (9 to 10 inch)
lemon juice
6 cups sliced, peeled, cored, apples
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon butter, softened

Peel, core and slice your apples down and place slices in a large bowl. Sprinkle the slices with a little lemon juice and set aside.

In a large bowl combine the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and ground allspice. Pour this sugar mixture over top of the apple slices and gently stir to coat the slices. Spoon the mixture into a 9 or 10 inch unbaked pie shell. Dot the top with some butter or margarine.

Apple Crisp Topping Ingredients:

1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup  Quick Oats oatmeal
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup butter, softened

Combine all of the above ingredients together in a large bowl except for the butter. Once they are combined, cut in the butter until the mixture becomes crumbly.  If mixture is too moist you can add additional all-purpose flour or oatmeal. Once you reach a crumbly texture, drop the mixture on top of the pie filling by the teaspoonful until its completely covered by the topping.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30-38 minutes or until the apples are soft and the pie is lightly browned. Remove from oven and let cool. You’ll want to store this pie in your refrigerator.

Serving Tips: You can serve it cold or warmed-up in your microwave. Some great toppings include: spoonful of vanilla bean ice cream, a spoonful of vanilla yogurt or a spoonful of frozen whipped topping on the top.

I love apple pie recipes and I just made an apple pie today. I like to vary the topping and this crispy coating should be delicious.

I love the idea of a crisp style topping. I’ve seenit on different fruit pies, and no matter what flavor, it is delicious.

This is one I want to try. I like apple pie and I like apple crisp but have never thought to do a combination. Looks wonderful.

That looks so good. It is apple season here! The weather has been a bit odd, but the apples although a bit smaller have such an intense flavor. I bet the house smells wonderful while this is baking!
