We all surround ourselves with little things that make us happy—a favorite cup for our morning coffee, seashells from our trip to the beach (sound familiar, Shelly?), Grandma’s candleholders on the mantelpiece, a vase of flowers from the garden. Now we can take our appreciation for special little things to a new level with the help of a new book, Draw Every Little Thing: Learn to Draw More than 100 Everyday Items, from Food to Fashion, by Flora Waycott (Walter Foster Publishing/Quarto Group, October 2019).

Draw Every Little Thing is the first release in a new series from Walter Foster Publishing called the Inspired Artist series, which “invites art hobbyists and casual art enthusiasts to have fun learning basic art concepts, relaxing into the creative process to make art in a playful, contemporary style.” This book certainly fits that definition, combining easy instructions with encouragement to cultivate enjoyment and creativity.
The book begins with lessons on tools and materials, drawing and painting techniques, and a bit of basic color theory. From there, you’ll find yourself immersed in all the little things you can capture on paper. Four sections cover different themes (indoors, outdoors, everyday life, and your town), then provides Creative Prompts and Exercises for things you can draw and paint within that scope. The step-by-step projects will have you drawing all sorts of little things, and soon you’ll find yourself looking at all the little things around you in a new light, with a new appreciation for them and the beauty they bring. A final section includes crafting projects that give you practical uses for your drawings.
Here are just some of the little things included in the book, by section:
• Around the Home: Vases, Today’s Outfit, and Pets
• Get Outside: Gardening Tools, Tiny Plants, and Insects
• Everyday Life: Lamps, Office Supplies, and Sewing Machine
• Around Town: Bicycle, Mailboxes, and Neighborhood Map
If you’ve got a budding artist on your gift list, Draw Every Little Thing would be a thoughtful present. You could bundle it with a few basic art supplies for a gift that is sure to be appreciated. It would be a great addition to your favorite artist’s bookshelf.
The author, Flora Waycott, has a charming illustrative style. If you enjoy her artwork in Draw Every Little Thing, take a look around her website, where you’ll find many more examples as well as more information about her.
