Young at Heart – 5 Steps to Maintaining Your Youthful Energy as You Age

Aches and pains can sneak up on you when you least expect them. It can seem like one day you’re leaping out of bed with enthusiasm, and the next, you’re creaking, cracking, and groaning as you drag yourself out. It can be a challenge, that’s for sure, to maintain your youthful energy.

However, while it’s challenging, it’s not impossible. Here are a few helpful tips for retaining that zest for life as the years fly by:

Seek Expert Help

You may never know on your own what it takes to maintain your youthful energy. Do you carry on with life as you used to, or is there something you need to change? Something as simple as aged care physiotherapy from an expert can be the answer.

You can learn about tailored exercise programs, work on strength and mobility, and receive helpful tips for pain management too. Physiotherapy can provide you with the right tools to hit the ground running – literally.

Make Better Food Choices

Food is medicine, and some ingredients are better than others for your health. If you lack energy, feel tired all the time, or just don’t feel like your best version of you, then look at your diet. Are you eating from all the right food groups? Are you getting enough water? Are you eating enough fruit and vegetables?

Fatty fish, bananas, sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole grains, and eggs can all help achieve your goal of being more energetic. Bananas are an excellent source of vitamin B6 and potassium, and studies have even shown a banana can be as helpful as some sports drinks. Fatty fish, on the other hand, can reduce inflammation, which is often a cause of fatigue. Talk to your GP about better food choices that might work for you.

Be Social

Many studies show that how young you feel can depend on who you’re around, social cues, and how social you are. If you are looking to maintain your youthful energy, then remember that you’re only as young as you feel. Spend time with friends, do fun things, and go on group holidays full of excitement and high energy. Your age shouldn’t dictate what you can and can’t do.

Volunteer

Volunteering has many benefits, including connection to others, career advancements, fun, and fulfillment. What it can also do is help keep you young. Volunteering is beneficial for both mind and body and could be the perfect way in which to stop yourself from falling into a daily rut of isolation and social exclusion. Aging may cause you to value your home comforts a little more, but it’s no excuse not to get out and about in your community.

Exercise

Exercise is beneficial throughout your life but can be even more so as you age. It can help to prevent diseases, improve cognitive function and social engagement, and also assist with mental health. Aim to exercise at least five times a week to retain youthful energy that keeps you fit, healthy, and happy.

Getting old is going to happen to us all. However, how different people age can depend on how they live their lives. Feel happy, healthy, and full of life by staying social, volunteering, eating well, and exercising. Many people also see the benefit of physiotherapy for mobility, strength, and tailored exercise programs. Take the time to evaluate the stage of life you’re in and see if there’s room for improvement. You may be able to retain your youthful energy easier than you think.

I agree with all these tips. I am incorporating more exercise in my routine and trying to eat better too.

I swim 3 times a week, volunteer often and sing once a week. I’m living a good life at 71.
