Bohemian style tends to pop its head out every few years in mainstream fashion, and this is one of those years. Whether it was sparked by festival fashion or the need for some hippy-scale peace in the world, boho will definitely be in stores all over the world, and if you want to wear it without looking like your mom in her 20s, you will want to follow these tips to make sure you are doing it right.
Don’t go all out
If you have a loose, tie-dye shirt on and some loose hippie pants and a bandana around your head and some nonsensical bracelets on your arm – you’re going to look way too wild. Some elements of boho are great, but more importantly – they’re enough. If you have only one piece of bohemian clothing on you, no matter what the rest of the outfit is, it will have a bohemian look. Like if you have regular jean shorts and sneakers, but switch out the plain T-shirt for a loose, bohemian-style one. This is why comebacks of fashion are so amazing: just a hint of them will give you the look you’re going for without the need to go all out.
See-through isn’t the way to go
A lot of modern bohemian fashion focuses on very light, sheer materials, in the tradition of the entirety of fashion going in that direction, but that isn’t the best news for you or for boho. Sure, you can find a completely see-through dress and put it on over a bikini, but you are losing the spirit of boho if you do that. Even if you have something like a see-through top, wear something with more coverage underneath, like a camisole or at least a bralette.
Dress it up
Bohemian wear isn’t just for casual days and hanging out in a park. It can look amazing if you dress it up for a night out or a special occasion. Look through midi dresses and find one that has a fun pattern and isn’t at all body-con. Something with bell sleeves would be great. Feel free to dress it up with some hippie details like a flower crown. Wear it with strappy sandals or casual fabric sneakers and instead of a bag, go for a knitted backpack to complete the look. It will be a great combination that is appropriate for pretty much any setting.
Denim or bust
You can’t talk about boho without the help of denim on the side. While the fabric itself isn’t exactly bohemian, all the ways you can decorate it definitely are. Embroidery on the backs of jackets and on pockets is a classic example, but also pom-poms, lace and other ornaments that can be stuck or sewn on. Get a plain denim jacket in your local thrift store and some decorations and make your own to really stay in the bohemian mindset. You can take in any direction you want, but the more color there is, the better and more bohemian it will look.
Chunky jewelry
Last, but definitely not least, is the jewelry. You probably know what it should be like: chunky and made of natural materials with lots of beads and strings. Just adding several chunky tribal-style bracelets on your arm will make your outfit look more boho, so feel free to wear it with your regular clothing as an entry to the world of bohemian fashion.
We need to celebrate all the fashion styles that were popular in the past, take the best bits of them and transform them for the future. It’s the best way for fashion to evolve and every one of us is a part of that process.
I am not sure that I would want to wear boho styles of clothing. I would probably enjoy the jewelry.
