Watermelon Painted Seashell Tablecloth Weights Craft Project

Craft Project: Watermelon Painted Seashell Tablecloth WeightsThe official kickoff to summer is just a few days away. During the summertime season we do a lot of outdoor entertaining. Our family enjoys backyard barbecues and pool parties and during most weekends, that’s where you’ll find us!

One issue that really bugs me is when my picnic table cloth doesn’t stay in place. The slightest breeze can really mess up your table setting and make a mess. You can find table cloth weights in your local department store, but I decided to make my own.

For this project I used 6 large clam shells seashells that measure at least 5″ in width.  If you don’t have access to seashells, look for large river rocks in a triangular-shape at the garden store or down by the river. Our large seashells are heavy enough to hold down the tablecloth!

Craft Project: Watermelon Painted Seashell Tablecloth Weights

6 Large Clam Seashells
Acrylic Craft Paint: Dark Green, Light Green, White, Dark Red
Medium Point Black Paint Pen
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish

Start off by painting the rind of the watermelon by using dark green, then light green and then white acrylic craft paint. I painted 6 shells at a time…so by the time I got back to shell #1…the dark green was dry and I moved on to the light green paint. I did them in assembly line fashion. You may need to use 2 coats of paint to get the coverage that you need.

I went with a metallic red color of paint for the watermelon which has pink undertones to it. I used 2 coats of paint to get the coverage that I needed. Let dry for 1 full hour or until no longer tacky. Use the black paint pen to make your tear-drop shaped watermelon seeds. You’ll want to space them out, don’t go overboard by adding too many!!! Let dry for 2-3 hours.

Take your painted seashells outside and spray them with 1-2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer in the glossy finish. You can use matte finish, but the glossy looks nicer in my honest opinion. Let them dry for 4-6 hours. That’s it, you’re done!

When using your new watermelon tablecloth weights you’ll want to place one on each corner of your picnic tablecloth and one along each long side of the tablecloth.  They look adorable sitting on your picnic table during those backyard barbecues and picnics.

Painted Strawberry Design Seashells Craft Project

Note: You can do other fruits or vegetables. I’ve made tomatoes and strawberries too! If you don’t need picnic tablecloth weights, you can make these painted seashells and use them as garden markers in your veggie garden too. Fun, Fun, Fun!!! Check out our strawberry version in the photograph above.

For the strawberry version above we base coated the large clam shell with 2 coats of red paint. We used dark green paint for the leafy cap and a combination of yellow and white for the strawberry’s seeds. Great project for adults with no painting skills and the kids would enjoy making them too!

This is such a great idea. These are much more attractive than weights. I love the watermelon one the most.

  2. How do you make them heavy enough to hold down the tablecloth? They don’t seem enough by themselves.

    • I used 5-7″ wide HEAVY surf clam shells. You have to use the big clam shells, not the small ones.

Watermelon is my favorite fruit, so I like this one, lol. It’s pretty cute.

Those are really adorable. That is really clever to use these as weights.

  5. We have that same issue with the tablecloth not staying in place and usually just try to put something heavy on it but this is such a better and cuter way. I would definitely do the watermelon but might try my hand at a strawberry one.

Super cute! Nothing says summer like a chilled watermelon. I would never have thought of making shell in the theme of a watermelon and then using them as tablecloth weights! Brillant!

I just love the watermelon shell! The shape of the shells sure lends itself well to ‘being’ a watermelon. I could see these working very well or table weights they would be cute!
