I bet you all thought I would run out of seashell craft projects by now. Right? Wrong! I’ve got boxes, upon boxes full of beautiful shells that I’ve collected (and continue to collect) from all of our trips down to the beach.
While many of the designs that I feature are painted onto large clam shells, you could certainly paint them onto smooth river rocks too. I completely understand that some readers don’t have access to a beach. Furthermore, you can buy seashells online or at your local craft supply store.

Craft Project: Painted FOX Seashells Yard and Garden Art
Large Clam Shell Seashells
2 Small Slipper Seashells
Acrylic Craft Paints Black, Red-Brown, White
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
E6000 Adhesive Glue
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish
We used a 5″ wide clean and dry clam shell for this project. Make sure you wash and thoroughly dry all seashells before painting on them.
Using white acrylic craft paint give your large clam seashell two coats of paint. Let dry. Give each slipper seashell 2 coats of red-brown colored acrylic craft paint (both sides of the shell) and let dry. You can leave the back side of your clam shell in its natural unpainted state.
You will want to use the red-brown paint to paint on the v-shaped mash onto his face, as shown in our photograph. We used 2 coats of paint to get the coverage that we needed. Let dry. Using the black paint add the pie-shaped nose, mouth and 2 oval-shaped eyes. Let dry. Dip the end of your paint brush into white paint and dot-on the inner eyes. Let dry.
E6000 Adhesive Glue is the BEST adhesive out in the retail marketplace for this type of craft. Use it to attach the painted ears to the top of his head. It will take a couple of hours for it to thoroughly dry. It will give you a good, strong bond that will last for several years!!!
Take your painted seashells outside and spray them (front and back) with 1-2 coats of Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer. I like to use 2 coats, allowing 30 minutes of drying time between coats. I also prefer the glossy finish, but you could use matte finish too. Let them dry for a few hours. Once you spray them with the sealer, they can be displayed inside or outside your home.
