Star Wars YODA Painted Seashells

I started dating my husband in 1984 and he left me know from the get-go that he was a die-hard Star Wars fan. Over the years he has collected all kinds of different Star Wars items such as: Christmas ornaments, action figures, comic books, books, apparel, life-size R2D2 toy box, toys, games, puzzles, etc. If I had to guess, I would estimate that he well over 500+ items in his collection.

One of his favorite characters is YODA and he asked me to make him a YODA seashell. If you’ve been following this blog for the past 3 years you’ll already know that I love painting on and crafting with seashells. You can find hundreds of different seashell craft projects right here on the blog.

I’m not a professional painter and I don’t pretend to be one. However, I think I did a decent job with his new YODA seashell. Here is what you’ll need to make this project.

I did a search on Google (through their images) for free Yoda templates and over 100 of them popped up. I found one that I liked, re-sized it and then printed it out. I decided to do just his head and picked a very easy & basic design. I don’t like to link to Google images as those links change often, so just do a search to find one that you like. Cut out the image using scissors and then trace it onto your seashell with pencil.

My design is painted on a large 5″ wide clam seashell. Make sure your seashell is clean and dry. If it needs to be cleaned I recommend doing that 4-5 days in advance and let them air dry. Make sure you get all of the sand off of them in the process.

Finding a good green color in acrylic paint to use for Yoda was difficult, so I ended up mixing 3 colors together to get the shade that I wanted. I mixed dark green, yellow and a tad of white together to get that funky green shade. I had to use 2 coats of paint to get the coverage that I wanted. Let it thoroughly dry before proceeding.

You can add his details one of two different ways. You can do all of your outlining and details with black acrylic paint and a paint brush or you can cheat and use a black Sharpie Marker. Entirely up to you. I began with his eyes and painted on 2 white almond shapes to serve as his eyes. While they were drying I used black acrylic paint to do all of my outlining and additional details. Once the eyes were dry I added his black eye, left dry for 20 minutes and then dotted on the inner white pupil. Let it all dry overnight.

Take your seashell outside the next day and lightly spray 2 coats of clear acrylic sealer on your shell. Once dry flip it over and repeat on the other side. This will protect your painted surface and keep the shell from breaking apart over the years. I opted to use a “glossy finish” sealer, but you could certainly spray yours with a
“matte finish”. That’s it, you’re done!!!

I remember sitting in a theater back in 1977, waiting to see Star Wars, as a 12 year old. I’ve been a huge fan ever since. I love this Yoda shell.
