Homemade Ham Pot Pie Recipe

How many of you enjoy eating ham? We do! I like to make a glazed ham in the oven or the smoker 3-4 times a year. I always buy a larger sized ham so that I have left-overs for making homemade soaps and stews. I will dice up the ham and toss it into storage bags…freeze until I’m ready to use it.

One way that I like to use our left-over ham is in a good homemade Ham Pot Pie style soup. You can make your own pot pie squares or purchase a bag of them at your local grocery store to save on time. See additional preparation notes below.

Homemade Ham Pot Pie Recipe

4 cups cooked ham (pulled apart into bite size chunks)
2 teaspoons of ham bouillon paste (see below)
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2-3 teaspoons parsley
1/4 cup finely chopped onions
1/4 cup finely chopped carrots (optional)
3 large potatoes, peeled and diced
1 pkg. pot pie squares

I like to make this in my slow cooker but you can certainly make it stove-top.

I use a ham bouillon paste which calls for 1 tsp. of bouillon per 1 cup of water. I measure out 6 cups of water into my slow cooker along with 6 teaspoons of bouillon paste. Add in the cooked and diced ham, salt, ground black pepper, parsley, onions, carrots (optional) and diced potatoes. Cook on your low setting for 5-6 hours or the high setting for 2-3 hours.

During the last hour of the cooking process boil-up your pot pie squares on the stove-top. Drain water. Pour the cooked squares into your slow cooker, turn down the heat to low and simmer for 1-2 hours. Serve when ready.

Note: I don’t recommend tossing the pot pie squares into the slow cooker any earlier than stated above. If they cook for too long they will become too mushy.
