I’m a girl – and being one is much harder than most people know. I often hear some of my guy friends say “You’ve got it easy. You’re a girl.” They say I’m lucky because I don’t have to give up my seat on the subway; they say I’m lucky to not have to pay during first dates. They also say that I’m lucky to not have to deal with carrying heavy baggage during camping trips. I should feel privileged because I’m a girl – or so they think.
But you know what? Being a girl is much harder than what most people imagine.
Being a girl, I can’t change my tires in public without guys coming to the rescue and saying “You’re such a poor fellow. This is no job for a girl. Let me help you.” I like the chivalry, sure, but being a girl doesn’t mean I’m weak.
Being a girl, I can’t pay for my own dinner because my date insists that it is his duty to pay. When things don’t work out, he verbally abuses me about all the “money he has invested.”
Lastly, being a girl, I can’t make myself pretty just for myself. Whenever I dress nice or put make-up on, people would tell me “What are you trying so hard for? Trying to snag a guy?” I just say no. The next day, I would wear nothing but sweatpants and people would come up to me and say “Do you hate yourself so much that you’d rather look like a mess?”
I’m a girl. But can’t I do something for myself for once?
This, my friend, is how I used to think. I hated the fact that people expect you to look your best when you felt your worst and judge you anyway for trying so hard (read more). I’m going to do things for myself and myself alone – even if it meant getting that nose job my friends were so adamantly against.
