Patriotic American Flag Painted Seashells

May 25, 2019 by Shelly

Do you enjoy celebrating and decorating for the patriotic holidays? Just want to put your love for the United States of America on display year-round? If you answered YES to either of those questions we’ve got a really easy patriotic seashell craft project to share with you today.

If you don’t have access to large clam seashells, you can make this project using smooth river rocks too! You can make several of them over the course of 2 afternoons and they won’t cost you a lot of money. A great project for the kids too!

If you enjoy painting on seashells or crafting with seashells…you’ll find over 70+ seashell craft projects right here on the Two Classy Chics blog! We will be sharing more seashell craft projects in the future too!

Large Clam Seashells
Blue and Red Metallic Acrylic Craft Paint
White Acrylic Craft Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish and Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish

Wash all sand and debris from your seashells or river rocks. Let them thoroughly dry before beginning this project.

Base coat the entire seashell with 2 coats of white acrylic craft paint and let dry. Using the photograph as your guide…paint one area with 2 coats of blue metallic craft paint and let dry. This area should represent the square section of the American flag.

Using the red metallic craft paint you’ll want to add the red stripes to your flag. We had to use 2 coats of red paint to get the even coverage that we wanted. Space out your stripes in distance to suit the size of seashell that you’re using. Use white acrylic craft paint to add your stars on the blue painted square. You can make stars or X’s, depending on your painting ability. Let dry.

Take your painted seashells outside and spray them with 2 coats of clear acrylic sealer. Let dry for 2-3 hours. The sealer will protect your painted finish from fading, cracking and chipping. You can then display your painted seashells inside or outside your home.

I would love to make and display these. I think I will use rocks since the shells I have aren’t quite large enough.

It never occurred to me to paint a shell in a flag design. So festive and will be cute for a July 4th party favor.
