KiwiCo & Discovery Tinker Make Your Own Light-Up Planetarium Kit

Our 9 year old granddaughter loves STEM projects and when she saw this new kit box…she went bananas. Literally. Inside the crate (kit box) you’ll find the Discovery #MindBlown Seeing Stars book which is fantastic! It teaches kids all about stars…the life cycle of a star, what is a star, type’s of stars, inside a star and so forth. On day one we read through that book twice and learned something new each time.

The crate also comes with the Tinker “Tinker Zine” kid’s magazine that is all about the stars and star gazing. There are hands-on projects to make, information about stars, places to go online to learn more, etc.

Now onto the Planetarium Project. Inside the crate are all of the building pieces that you’ll need along with a fold-out instruction sheet. Kids will start off by building the dome, then building the stand, attaching the base, and then putting it all together. The instruction sheet includes a nice section on Planetarium Viewing Tips to help teach your child how to spot the groups of stars using their newly built Planetarium. The ONLY thing you need to add to the crate/kit are: The Tinker Crate Box (save it), scissors and a pencil.

My husband sat down with our 9 year old granddaughter and the two of them got busy. It will take your child a few hours to build the Planetarium. We kept our granddaughter at our house for a weekend stay and took a few breaks while working on the project. As you can see from our photographs, her new Planetarium turned out nicely.

I think that this subscription is a great idea for kids. When my grandchildren are older I would like to get something like this subscription.

  2. My granddaughter would be thrilled with this kit too. The planetarium looks so neat and it would be a fun weekend or summer project.
