How to Plan Your Next Home Renovation

May 9, 2019 by Sam H.

How to Plan Your Next Home RenovationA bit of change every now and then can completely alter your mood and your outlook. Conversely, if we allow our lives to stagnate and our surroundings to remain unchanged for too long, it can lead to poor moods and a worse overall outlook on life. Even if you can’t afford to move to a new property, you can rearrange the one you live in.

Whether you undertake extensive renovations of your property, or you target a specific part of it – perhaps by installing one of these new cheap kitchens or overhauling your dingy living room – you can transform your surroundings while also giving your emotional health a boost. However, if you go about things in the wrong way, renovations can end up causing you far more stress and anxiety than they need to. As such, a smooth and painless transformation for your property requires careful planning and execution.

The following tips will help you to ensure that your home renovations are as enjoyable and relaxing an experience as humanly possible.

Work Out Your Budget First

The amount of money that you have available to spend on your renovations will be a significant factor in determining what is and isn’t feasible. In other words, if you can’t afford to do something, there’s no point in planning for it. Instead, you can focus on projects that are realistic and attainable. Establishing your budget beforehand also prevents you from falling into the disastrous situation of being halfway through your renovations before you realize that your plans are unaffordable.

Establishing your budget beforehand also prevents you from falling into the disastrous situation of being halfway through your renovations before you realize that your plans are unaffordable.

Many people may forget to budget the smaller but important details of home renovation. For example, if you have a large amount of rubbish to remove from the home and don’t have the means to do this on your own then hiring a rubbish removal bentleigh service (or one near you) is a necessary cost to be factored into this renovation journey.

If you want to undertake renovation work that you currently can’t afford, you will have to think of some ways of raising the money. Of course, there are an endless number of ways that you can earn money, it really is up to you. For some people, taking up a part time job to earn some extra spending money will be the most feasible choice. However, many people will find a loan to be their best choice. If you do decide to seek a loan, make sure that you check your options carefully.

The best loan type will depend on your situation, some types of loan might not be available to you. For example, you can see the following link to see the requirements to take out fast cash loans, also known as payday loans. These are ideal for short-term loans when you know that you have money coming in soon to pay off the debt.

Remember that if your renovations are extensive enough, you might need to move out of the property temporarily. If this is the case, you will need to also factor in the cost of accommodation during the renovations.

Make Sure Your Home is Ready

Before you get too far into your planning, make sure that your home will be able to take whatever alterations you want to make. Structural imperfections and weaknesses can make some work unfeasible, or even dangerous. It is important to be sure that your property is strong enough on a structural level to handle the stress of the work itself and the load of the resulting altered structure.

If you are unsure about the structural integrity of your property during or after any renovation works, it is vital that you consult with a qualified professional. Carrying out works on a structurally unsound structure can be dangerous for you and for other people – don’t do it.

Make Sure You Know What You Want

This is another common pitfall that homeowners fall into when it is time to carry out renovations on their property. You should aim to start your renovations with a crystal clear vision for what the final finished works will look like. The clearer you are about where you’re going, the easier you will find it is to get there.

If other people are going to be helping you with your renovations, or even completing them on your behalf, you need to know that you can accurately convey your vision to them. If there are any crossed wires in your communications with other workers, the result will be that you end up with renovations that don’t end up the way you’d hoped. This can be anything from frustrating to disastrous depending on how it turns out. There’s no need to compromise on your vision if you are able to clearly explain it to others.

Always Get Estimates

Whenever you are going to be hiring someone else to complete work for you, make sure that you shop around and check all of your available options. Estimates will help you evaluate the cost of undertaking a project, and will give you the opportunity to abandon a project that you can’t afford to see through to completion.

There may be opportunities to reduce the costs of obtaining specific services; it is always worth asking any tradesman or businesses you are thinking about hiring to complete work for you whether there are any adjustments they can make to their service that will result in a different price. It is also worth researching multiple Residential Contractors Prince George (or in your local area) and comparing quotes, and any reviews from previous clients; this way you can know what to expect for the cost of the services you require.

Make Sure You Have Permission

We’ve all seen those horror stories in the news about people who have poured their life savings, and in some cases years of their life, into constructing or renovating a home, only to be told to take the structures down because the owner didn’t obtain permission. If you undertake work that you don’t have the appropriate permissions for, the results can be very serious. Consult with the planning officer at your local authority beforehand to ascertain what permissions you need to seek.

Building without permission can result in you having to take down any structures that you modify, or reverse the modifications. However, the consequences can be even more serious than this. For example, building work that causes damage to any surrounding structures will open you up to legal and financial liabilities, perhaps even fines. Make sure that you are certain that you have the appropriate permission for any works you want to carry out.

The more time you are willing to spend planning your next home renovations, the smoother the whole process will be. Even a little preparation can go a long way to making your renovations a fun and relaxing experience rather than a stressful one.

This was really educational for me to read and I thank you for posting it. I am curious about permissions if we want to fix up our main bathroom we probably don’t need a permit for that? I know you need one if you build an out building or deck.

Getting estimates is good. Since workmen are so expensive even if they’re competent and ethical, it’s even better if you can do some of the work yourself!

It’s amazing how many people don’t realize you need permission to add decks, additions, etc. This is good advice.
