Kid’s Craft Project: Hand-Painted Pet Portraits
Looking for a fun project to do with the kids this weekend? Got pets in the house? If so, this kid’s craft project is for you! All you need is a few general painting supplies and an unfinished wood easel. This is a project that can be completed in one afternoon! Look for the small art canvas boards on sale at your local craft supply store (should be around $2.00) to keep costs down. Make sure you pick a canvas size that will fit onto the wood easel when purchasing your supplies.

Kid’s Craft Project: Hand-Painted Pet Portraits
Small Art Canvas Board
Acrylic Paints in Desired Colors
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Unfinished Wood Easel
Old Newspaper or Plastic Tablecloth
Black Sharpie Marker
Lay newspaper or a plastic tablecloth down onto your work surface to protect it. Kids can get messy when they’re using paint.
Let the kids paint a portrait of their favorite pet or any animal that they love. It can be dogs, cats, fish, lions, tigers, dolphins, monkeys, whatever. They will want to paint their background color first. Let it dry for about 20 minutes. They will then start painting the portrait animal on top of their painted background. They can do just an animal or add additional details like plant life, the sky, sun, etc. Whatever their heart’s desire.
While the canvas is drying they will want to paint their wooden easel in a complimentary color to go with their canvas design. Granddaughter selected a mustard color so that her easel popped against the green background of her canvas. You will need to let the easel dry for about 45 minutes.
Once everything is done you’ll want to have the child use a black Sharpie Marker to autograph their portrait on the front or the back, along with the date that it was made. It’s now ready to be displayed and a keepsake that they can keep fur-ever (forever). Have fun and let them get creative!
