Last year I received a foodie gift basket that arrived in a wooden storage crate. While I loved all of the foodie goodies…I absolutely hated the wood storage crate! Why you might ask? Well…it was done in a redwood stain which doesn’t work in my coastal style home! Since I had no need for the crate…I tossed it into my yard sale box and had planned on getting rid of it.

Well, I had a change of heart. I decided to upcycle it and turn it into a beautiful piece that would work with my coastal & beach home decor. I got it out of the box and here is how I transformed it.
The first thing that that I did was clean it! I wiped it down and then used some fine grade sandpaper on it. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and left it air dry overnight. The following day I gave it a new paint job! Using a foam brush I added 2 coats of white paint inside and out. I made sure that I got into all of the nooks and crannies and left it dry overnight.
I found an unfinished wood starfish cutout at my local craft supply store. I decided to paint it with 2 coats of gold acrylic metallic craft paint. I left it dry for 4 hours. I used wood glue to attach it to the front of the wooden crate and left it dry for several hours. I took a quarter and traced around it 4 times on a piece of white craft felt. Using scissors I cut out my circles and then glued my new “felt feet” onto the bottom of the crate. Now it won’t scratch any surfaces!
For now I’m using my new coastal style wooden storage crate to hold some of my beauty supplies in our one bathroom. It fits perfectly on top of the toilet tank which looks really nice. I’m not sure if I will keep it there or move it somewhere else, but for now…that’s how I’m using it.
You can easily change the color of your gift baskets and wooden storage crates by just using a little bit of paint! A win-win for me!

I like how you upcycled this storage crate. I think I could use one in the basement and another in the garage to store cleaning supplies
My daughter has coastal decor. It would be a good gift box. Im thinking!
Very nice! I love upcycled products and love your coastal style!
What a clever idea that fits perfectly with your décor. It would have been a shame to have gotten rid of it.
That is really cute. I love ideas on how to reuse something and make it into something new and useful.
I think it looks really pretty, very ‘coastal.’ You definitely found a great way to repurpose it!
Love this idea! Would be a cute Hostess gift. Take the cute wooden storage crate and paint it. Then fill with a bottle of wine, spaghetti sauce, pasta and maybe some fresh peppers and onions. Then add a spaghetti recipe and wrap in plastic and pretty bow.
Homemade gifts such a this are a fav for me.
I love this idea and think I could have a lot of fun making these. I love putting my bathroom products in cute boxes and this would be fun I could make a custom box with my bathroom colors. I had no idea that you could buy these on Amazon. I would also love to make some boxes for friends and family for gifts.
Yup, I found extra ones over on Amazon 2 weeks ago and they’ve already arrived. I’m working on one right now. I’m going to use this second one underneath my kitchen sink to hold my extra dish soap, liquid hand soap, sponges, kitchen sink cleaner, etc. Perfect size. Plus, when I need to get something out of it…I can lift the entire storage crate out. Great way to keep all of those supplies and bottles organized under there.
The third one that I’m making will be used in our guest bathroom to hold extra rolls of toilet paper.
