Over the past few years I’ve reviewed a lot of children’s books here on the blog. We’ve featured picture books, music books, early-read books, chapter books and more. The book that I’m featuring today has become my children’s new favorite book! I think you and the kids are going to love this one!

Title: The Backpack
Author: Lindsay C. Barry
Illustrator: Klaudia Bezak
Wanting the latest and greatest clothes, toys, and gear isn’t uncommon among kids; they see what their peers have and that sets the standard. Even parents are feeling the pressure to fit in more than ever, weighed down with expectations to provided whatever it is that will make their children appear “cool”. But what message is that really sending to our kids? Do we need to look and act like everyone else to be happy?
These questions are posed and the answers subtly revealed in the fun, thoughtful, and beautifully crafted new children’s picture book, The Backpack by Lindsay C. Barry. In the book you’ll follow a young girl as she carefully chooses the perfect backpack for school, while her dad reminds her to stay focused on what really matters; what’s inside – and he doesn’t mean pencils and folders!
As she journeys to school, she notices a new boy on the bus who others poke fun at for the way he looks and acts. She notices he skateboards, and clings onto this as common ground, since she’s always wanted to learn that hobby. Later in the cafeteria, as he shuffles by without a group to belong to, she calls out to him and invites him to sit with her and a friendship blooms.
The author Lindsay C. Barry penned her first children’s book titled Journey to Constellation Station with The Backpack being her second children’s book. The books are available for purchase on Amazon. You can learn more about the author and her books by visiting www.lbarrybooks.com and by connecting with the author on Facebook.
My children (ages 3 1/2 and 9) love this book! My 9 year old got the gist of the story right away and my 3 1/2 year finally understood it after we’ve read it a few times. A story like this is important and all children need to learn about this at a young age. My son is in preschool and kids at his young age compete with one another too. They often call each other names, even though they don’t understand what those names mean & how hurtful they are.
The book is beautifully written and the illustrations throughout the book are beautiful too. I think the book is appropriate for all young children and an important book to have in their library. Its an easy-read and one your children will ask you to read often. Kudos to the author for a job well done!

I liked and learned that Lindsay grew up surrounded by books, and now that she has two children and a few overflowing bookcases, she realizes that she’s surrounded them in books as well. She still feels an energy when entering a library, wondering what she’ll discover. The feeling is also partly worrying about how her rambunctious boys will behave…but she sure is glad that they share her love of books!
