4 Tips to Get Your Dream Job

March 25, 2019 by Sam H.

4 Tips to Get Your Dream JobSome people are extremely lucky to do what they love and earn from it. In reality, it doesn’t take only luck to land an opportunity like that. Most people who are working their dream job have invested time, effort, and resources to be where they are now.

Your dream job won’t land on your lap. You must find and create your own opportunities to go where you want to be. You can start by following these helpful tips to get your dream job.

Know What You Actually Want

Define your goals and expectations for the new job. What industry do you want to be a part of? What kind of company culture are you looking for? Do you want structure and routine, or do you prefer freedom and flexibility in managing your time?

Knowing all these will help narrow your search for a job that fits you. If you just apply for random jobs, there’s a higher probability that you won’t get what you want or reach your professional goals in that position. On the other hand, if you know what you’re getting into when you apply for a job, you know or at least have an idea of the career path you’re going to take.

Put Yourself Out There

Applying at job listing sites isn’t just the only way you can find a job. Nowadays, employers also actively search for talent in professional networking platforms, such as LinkedIn, BranchOut, and AngelList. Some in areas such as law and marketing fields even frequently partner with reputable legal recruiting firms or their industry-specific headhunters to connect with strong candidates. So connecting with them through trusted online directories can open up opportunities you might otherwise miss.

Social media is another avenue to look for opportunities. You can find groups, pages, and other professionals in your niche. In addition, many employers or human resource managers do a background check on social media. That’s why it’s necessary to clean your Facebook, Twitter, and social media accounts before you start applying.

Join seminars, workshops, conferences, and events in your industry too. You will be able to meet and network with other professionals in the field and possibly find employment opportunities. Joining these events will also help you gain more knowledge and skills in your field.

Do Your Prep Work

If you’ve found your dream job, you must work for it. The first step is to apply for the job, but to do that, you have to prepare your résumé and cover letter. Every job has its own demands, so it’s part of the step to tailor your résumé and cover letter.

But you can’t do that without knowing what you’re going into. As such, you must do your research about the company and position you’re applying for in order to know which skills and qualifications are required for the job. When you’re aware, you can showcase these in your résumé and cover letter. Having information also builds your confidence and assurance during the application process.

After submitting your job application, you will be called in for an interview if you have what they’re looking for. This is another step you have prepared for. Your competence, knowledge of the job, and communication skills will be extremely valuable at this stage. If you can showcase them properly, you will have a higher chance of getting the position.

It’s not only your knowledge and skills that are necessary, but also your well-being. Although many workplaces are becoming more and more liberal, many employers still require job applicants to pass a drug test and other medical exams to ensure that you’re fit to work.

Stay in the Know

Stay up-to-date on the latest industry news and trends. This will help keep your skills and knowledge relevant, which is necessary for most, if not all, fields. Aside from field research and updates, your information on tips and tricks about employment and job hunting should also be constantly refreshed.

These will give you valuable insights to help with looking for the best job opportunities, networking with industry professionals, discovering what employers want, and negotiating your salary, among many things. Being in the know will equip you with the information and confidence you need to find and land your dream job.

Before You Go

You can write a killer résumé and cover letter, hone your interview skills, and have the best references to get your dream job. However, these things won’t help you once you’re doing the work. The best way to land and keep the job you’ve always wanted is to have the knowledge, skills, and competency to perform your responsibilities successfully.

That said, invest in yourself. Read books to learn new things and join workshops to gain different skills. For example, if you want to be an aircraft mechanic, then you can attend aircraft mechanic schools (or ones in your state) to get some direct hands-on experience. Also, it would be smart to develop your communication skills and network as they can be an invaluable help in this saturated job market.

In the end, competence will shine through. As long as you have this, you can have the confidence that employers will want you.

These are good tips. It is important to do your prep work and some people do not realize that potential bosses look at the social network accounts.
