Spending Time on Sunset Beach in Cape May

Sunset Beach in Cape May, New JerseyMy family enjoys going down to the Jersey Shore and in particular…the Wildwood and Cape May areas. We’ve been visiting the area at least once a year since 1999 and love it there! You’ll find the prettiest beaches in Stone Harbor, North Wildwood and in Cape May.

When we’re down in the Cape May area we like to hang out on Sunset Beach. It’s a free beach (no beach tags required) and you’ll find free parking nearby. It’s a small beach on the bay side and isn’t clogged up with tourists. It’s a great spot to hang out for the afternoon enjoying the sun, sand and surf!

Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey - Boat and Dolphin Watching

There are 3 gift shops nearby, the Sunset Beach Grille and the Sunset Beach Mini Golf. While on the beach you can put quarters into the telescope and look out into the water to see some of the boats passing by. Many of these boats are the dolphin & whale watching cruises and/or the Cape May Lewes Ferry. My granddaughter loves to use that telescope, so we always come prepared with a handful of quarters.

While sitting or standing on the beach you can see what’s left of the S.S. Atlantus, the famous sunken concrete ship! As you can see in our one photo, there is not much of it left sticking out of the water. It now serves as a reef where fish and wildlife can breed and hide. Sort of like a coral reef. Isn’t it cool looking? I think so!

We will typically spend an entire afternoon enjoying all of the things that Sunset Beach has to offer. It’s a really nice smaller beach in Cape May and if you’re ever down in the area, I highly recommend that you stop by for a visit.

I wish I lived closer to the beach. It can clear the cobwebs out of my head anytime of year. Ahhh!

  3. I have never been to Cape May, but have heard of it! It sounds like a lovely place to visit and tour 🙂

  4. I’ve been to Wildwood, but never Cape May. Would love to visit there. I heard it also beautiful at Christmas.

  5. That is ice that the old ship serves as a reef for wildlife now. The pictures are lovely. In fact looking at the snow here and the pictures there it makes me think of summer. I really like seeing places like this.

  6. I am a history Buff and enjoy learning from this post the SS Atlantus sank at Cape May. For me,the smaller beaches are usually the ones with the most character. Cape May looks like a good beach to visit with the little ones.
