Kid’s Crafts Painted Seashells for Valentine’s Day

Kid's Crafts Painted Seashells for Valentine's DayValentine’s Day is just around the corner and we have a fun, inexpensive craft project that you can do with the kids. For this project you just need some “found” seashells (we used large clam shells) or smooth river rocks, along with some acrylic craft paint. Let the fun begin!

Large Clam Shells or River Rocks
Acrylic Craft Paints
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer, Glossy Finish
Old Newspaper or Plastic Tablecloth

Lay down a few sheets of old newspaper or an old plastic table cloth to protect your work surface. Kids can get messy with paints!

You want to wash your river rocks or seashells a few days ahead of time to remove sand, dirt and debris. They need to be completely dry before painting them.

We like to use old plastic butter dishes and the lids as our water dish and paint palette. Squirt out a few different colors of acrylic craft paint and let the kids get creative with their designs.

As you can see…the kids used a variety of colors in their designs and tried to make them pertain to the Valentine’s Day holiday. Hearts, flowers, loving words, etc. all work well. We did this project with a group of kids ages 8 through 12 year of age.

Once the paint has thoroughly dried, take the seashells (or) river rocks outside and lay them down onto newspaper. Spray them with 1-2 coats of clear acrylic spray sealer and let dry for 2-3 hours. That’s it, you’re done! They can now be displayed inside or outside of your home, or given as gifts to loved ones.

These are cute, but I would place the heart the other way on the shell. I want to start using shells with my grandkids when they are older.

  2. These are so cute. I can really see thee especially around a flower border or some place like that! In our climate you would have to pick them up in the fall, but I think hey would be neat. I am finding some shells and handing some paint to my niece an get her busy. OR I will do it !

  3. At least these go well on rocks as well as seashells. Cute designs.

  4. I think I’ll have my grandkids do this to give to their parents. What darling gifts they will make.

These are really cute. I like the purple one with the hearts. Kids would love doing these, too.

I love all your creative ideas for the shells and rocks. Since we do not go to the beach, I have started using rocks with the kids. They love it. Thanks.
