Kid’s Crafts Hand Painted Piggy River Rocks

February 16, 2019 by Shelly

We like to take our grandchildren out for nature walks and hikes. When we’re outdoors we like to collect smooth river rocks, acorns, driftwood, seashells and other items that we find. We collect these items and store them for later use when we need to whip up some nature inspired craft projects.

Today’s kid’s craft project is really easy-to-make and was made by a group of 7 to 9 year old’s. This project costs less than $1.00 each to make!

Oval Shaped Smooth River Rocks
Light Pink, Dark Pink and White Acrylic Paint
Black Sharpie Marker, Fine Point
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Old Newspaper
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer in Glossy Finish

Lay newspaper down onto your work surface. You’ll want to use smooth, oval-shaped river rocks. Base coat each one with 2 coats of light pink acrylic paint. Let dry for 30 minutes, before adding on the details.

Use dark pink paint to paint on an oval-shaped nose (snout), 2 triangular-shaped ears and a curly-Q shaped tail at the back end of your rock. See photo for placement. Dip the end of your paint brush into white paint and dot on 2 eyes above the snout and below the ears. Once the dark pink paint has dried use the black Sharpie Marker to outline the ears, eyes and to add 2 small dots onto the pig’s snout. Let dry for about 45 minutes.

Take newspaper outside and lay your river rocks on top. Spray them with the clear acrylic spray sealer. Let dry for 1 hour. Flip them over and spray the other side. Let dry for 1 hour. If displaying indoors, one coat will be enough to protect your painted finish. If you plan on displaying them outdoors, add a second coat. That’s it, you’re done!

These hand-painted Piggy River Rocks are really cute displayed in your flower beds, in your flower pots, sitting on your shelves, etc. Kids love to make them and of course, play with them!

This one is really cute! Being from Iowa I can appreciate pigg rocks ha! I like how these would be coated enough to display them outside. I would bring them in before snow fall though! These would be more great for flower gardens on the edges.
