A Family Visit to Reservoir Park in Harrisburg

February 27, 2019 by Shelly

Reservoir Park in Harrisburg PennsylvaniaReservoir Park is the largest and oldest municipal park in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. If you’re unfamiliar with the area, Harrisburg is the capital city and located in Dauphin County. If you’re looking at a map, you’ll find Harrisburg located in south-central Pennsylvania.

The park sits on a hilltop that overlooks the city and is free to visit. You’ll find easy-to-walk paved walking paths, beautiful water fountains, park benches, etc. The park is also home to the National Civil War Museum and to the Mansion at Reservoir Park.

It’s open year-round and a really nice park to visit. Throughout the year the city hosts various outdoor festivals, fairs, music concerts, plays and events on the park grounds. Many of them are held in the park’s small amphitheater. Some of these events charge an admission fee and you’ll have to bring your own lawn chairs for seating.

Every couple of months we like to go down to the park to just walk around and get some fresh air. The kids like checking out the beautiful water fountains and the adults enjoy the stunning skyline views of the city. During the fall season you’ll be treated to some pretty views of the fall foliage, especially from mid-October through mid-November.

It’s a nice park for the locals to visit…but if you’re just passing through, I wouldn’t make a special trip. We spent 2 hours walking the grounds and just enjoying one another’s company, the pretty views of the city and of the surrounding area.

Do you enjoy going out and visiting local parks within your own community? If so, what are some of your favorite municipal parks and what do you like about that particular park?

It does look like a nice place. I’d like to see the Civil War Museum there.
