Craft Project: Coastal Design Wooden Birdhouse

February 9, 2019 by Shelly

Craft Project: Coastal Design Wooden BirdhouseA few weeks ago I was in a local store and saw a little decorative birdhouse that was painted in a beach and coastal style. That birdhouse measured about 6″ tall and was purely for decorative purposes, not meant to be hung outdoors. While I loved that birdhouse, I wasn’t willing to pay $29.99 for it. Nope, I’m too frugal for that.

The following week I headed into my craft supply store and picked up some supplies to make my own. Even though mine isn’t as elaborate as the one that I saw, I still think it came out nicely and I love it. Here’s how I made it.

Craft Project: Coastal Design Wooden Birdhouse

4″ Tall Unfinished Wood Birdhouse
White and Black Acrylic Craft Paint
Metallic Turquoise Acrylic Craft Paint
Metallic Gold Acrylic Craft Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer – Glossy Finish

As you can see from my photo, I painted the bottom portion of the birdhouse with 2 coats of white acrylic craft paint. I painted 2 coats of metallic turquoise paint on the roof and also use that same color on the little wooden perch. I left all of the paint dry for about 2 hours or until no longer tacky.

I drew my own starfish shape onto a piece of paper and cut it out. I trace that shape onto each side of the roof using a pencil. The gold metallic acrylic paint was used to fill in the starfish shape and I had to use 2 coats of the paint to get good coverage. Let dry for at least an hour. (metallic paint takes longer to dry). Use the black acrylic paint to outline each of the starfish and to add on your starfish spots. Let dry for about an hour.

Once the birdhouse has completely dried you’ll want to take it outside and spray it with 2 coats of the clear acrylic sealer. This sealer will protect your painted finish from chipping, crazing and cracking.  You can now display your new coastal beach theme’d birdhouse inside or outside! That’s it, you’re done!

I am putting this on my save and to do list as it is so pretty. I think it would make a great project to have on hand when my granddaughter visits.

This is great and you saved so much money. Also you can custom color it the way you want. Thank you for the idea.

Your birdhouse is so cute! I like how you painted it in a coastal theme and the colors are pretty too.
