Classic Old-Fashioned Dessert Cakes

chocolate cake with chocolate frostingToday I wanted to talk about classic old-fashioned Birthday cakes. You know the ones that you personally whip up and bake in your own kitchen without all of the fancy crap!

When it comes to homemade cakes…what cake flavor is your favorite and what kind of icing, frosting or glaze do you enjoy on the top?

The reason I bring this up as our food topic today because we recently attended a Birthday party where there were 2 fancy cakes that each cost a minimum of $75 a piece. Personally, I think that is ridiculous unless it is a special wedding or special party but for yearly Birthday parties…ridiculous.

When it comes to a good homemade classic cake I like a moist white cake with a thick chocolate frosting. Hubby likes a good chocolate cake with a creamy peanut butter icing. My daughter and grand daughter are not big cake-eaters but when they do eat it…they prefer chocolate.

So, let’s hear about your cake preferences on what you like and/or dislike?

I love a good vanilla yellow cake with chocolate frosting or a chocolate tart cherry cake/. I bake my own cakes both to save money and because I think they taste better!

  2. The cake I always always asked for for my own birthday was angel food made with 7up. If Mom got strawberries, so much the better. As far as a batter cake, a nice white cake with white frosting of some sor is our choice. I rarely do bake a whole cake now, so having some is a treat I enjoy.

  3. I’d like the chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. As far as I’m concerned a cake is just a cake and the occasion is the focus.

  4. I have never had a homemade chocolate cake with a creamy peanut butter icing that sounds like heaven. I so have to try to make this cake thanks for the idea.

  5. My all time favorite cake is chocolate fudge with sour cream frosting. Honestly though just about any cake works for me.

  6. There is just something special about old fashioned desert cake! It is delicious and soul soothing.

I love homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. My Grandma made a rum cake (a bundt cake) that was so good we still use that recipe on holidays.

  8. I agree, that much for a birthday cake is too much. I like yellow cake with chocolate icing. It reminds me of my childhood.
