6 Things You Can Do to Prevent Tripping and Falling in Your Home

February 7, 2019 by Sam H.

6 Things You Can Do to Prevent Tripping and Falling in Your HomeSlippery floors, electrical cords, and rickety stairs are the most common causes of trips and falls often experienced at our homes. Injuries such as bruises, lacerations, sprains, broken bones, and head injuries can be inevitable. Fortunately, such injuries can be prevented by preventing the trips and falls. The following are some of the ways that you can proactively manage your home to prevent such risks to you and your loved ones. Please read on.

1. Manage Cords

Phone, internet, and power cords might create a sea of obstacles for you or your loved ones at home. Tripping and falling may easily occur due to such. To prevent this from happening, ensure to have cables running under the carpets and mats or behind walls. You can hire a helping hand from professional movers when moving to ensure the proper management of such cords and other materials that could be hazardous.

2. Ensure to Always Have Appropriate Footwear

While wearing socks when indoors can be very comfortable, they present a slipping risk, especially if they’re not non-slip socks. Wear shoes that have efficient grips on the soles. If you’re somehow uncomfortable with shoes, look for non-slip socks.

3. Proper Lighting

Improper lighting in your home is among the major hazards. Perhaps, you can hardly avoid what you cannot see, right? Therefore, ensure to install brighter light bulbs in sensitive areas like the narrow hallways and stairways. The bathrooms and bedrooms should also have night-lights for convenience in walking at night. Proper lighting is also essential if you’re having seniors in your home since poor vision is a common condition among the elderly. You can schedule home maintenance services to install the lights in the crucial places.

4. Keep Walking Surfaces Free of Clutter

Keeping your home neat and tidy is very essential in preventing tripping over and falling in your home. Presence of clutter, like old magazines and newspapers, on walking surfaces such as the staircases and hallways, poses a great threat to your safety and those of your loved ones. Ensure to always remove all clutter from the walking surfaces as soon as possible.

5. Install Handrails and Grab Bars

Handrails and grab bars are vital safety devices that you should consider having in your home, especially when you’re having kids or seniors in the place. These devices will be useful for stepping in and out of your bathtub, getting on and off the toilet, and going up and down the stairs without sustaining any injuries. Ensure to have handrails in hallways and stairways and grab bars by bathtubs and toilets to prevent tripping and falling and for convenience as well. If you’re a DIY enthusiast, this will be a simple task. You may ask a friend to offer some help as well.

6. Use Non-Skid Throw Rugs on Slippery Floors

Showers, bathtubs, kitchen floors, and bathroom floors can become a serious hazard when wet. To prevent tripping and falling on such surfaces, have non-skid throw rugs on these areas. You’ll need to ensure these rugs contain non-skid padding underneath them for convenience.

Conclusion

Trips and falls can result in severe injuries, especially for your senior loved ones. However, most of the injuries can be prevented with the right measures. These are some of the most effective practices that you can implement in your home to prevent tripping and falling. You should always pay close attention to possible hazards that can bring harm to you and your loved ones at home. Let your home be the safest place anyone can be. Good luck!

These are all good tips. I had to make sure that my rugs were non-slip in my living room.

These are good reminders to go through the house and make sure that there are no tripping hazards. I took a fall down our stairs a few years back and took quite awhile to recover from a sore back.

(6 Things You Can Do to Prevent Tripping and Falling in Your Home) This is very important to do in your home. My husband put in a bright light at the very top of our basement stairway for more lighting because it was way too dark going down the basement stairs.

This was a very informative post to read. I hurt myself after falling and am still trying to get better.
