Visiting the Historic Mercer County Courthouse
We do a lot of traveling and prefer to travel by car. We love taking road trips and passing through small towns and communities. When we’re passing through these small towns we like to look at their old buildings and architecture. We’re specifically fond at looking at old churches, courthouses and visiting old cemeteries. Yes, we’re weird…but we enjoy looking at them!
While on a road trip through northwestern Pennsylvania we passed through Mercer County and stumbled upon the historic Mercer County Courthouse. It was built in 1910 and is the tallest building in the center of town. We could see it a mile or two away!
It’s a large courthouse featuring dark red brick that is accented with stone columns. It’s very distinctive looking and the town clock sits at the top of the building with it facing all 4 sides of the building. In other words, you can see the current time from any of the 4 sides.
The building is absolutely amazing to see in person. It was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1998. There are parking places along the front and sides of the building, so you can park your car and get out to take a walk. There are a few park benches nearby too.
We love visiting places like this and totally stumbled upon this beauty by accident. We were just passing through and needed to stop to take a break. Wow, what a beautiful old courthouse! I’m so glad that I had the chance to photograph it.
