Family Visit to the Wildwood Park Olewine Nature Center

January 30, 2019 by Shelly

Wildwood Park Olewine Nature Center in Harrisburg, PennsylvaniaThe Wildwood Park Olewine Nature Center is located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The center sits within the grounds of Wildwood Lake where you can go hiking, biking and walking for free. They have beautiful trails that go around the lake which give you the opportunity to see some of the wildlife that lives in the surrounding area.

It’s a small indoor nature center that is FREE to visit. You can opt to leave a donation (appreciated) and they have a small on-site gift store where you can purchase some souvenirs when you’re done.

During our visit our grandchildren had the opportunity to learn about the wildlife that lives in our surrounding area and the important role that the animals play in our ecosystem. They also learned that it’s our job to keep our environment safe & clean, so that those animals can remain healthy and survive.

I think it’s important to teach our children at an early age about recycling and the importance of doing it. In addition, we need to teach our kids to respect our environment and to never litter. The consequences of litter is destroying our beautiful planet! They have a great exhibit where children can learn all about this and I hope parents continue to teach their kids about it once they return home. While it may be inconvenient at times to recycle, it is indeed IMPORTANT.

There is a section in the nature center that is set up for birdwatching. The entire wall is all glass windows and they have chairs sitting in front of them. You can sit down and use binoculars, telescopes, etc. to watch the birds. Outside of the windows they have some feeding areas set up where the local birds like to come and eat. It’s a really cool experience if you love birds!

We spent an entire hour wondering through this little nature center with our grandchildren and had a really nice time. If you’re in the area or passing through, the Wildwood Park Olewine Nature Center offers free admission and free on-site parking. It’s a great place to visit!

This does look like a great place to visit because you can learn at the same time. I appreciate that they are teaching recycling.

I am glad to see they are teaching about recycling. Plastics are a HUGE problem. I wish the USA would adopt some of other countries solutions such as burning because much of our plastic used to be exported and now it end up in the oceans and in wildlife and ultimately in us.
The nature center sounds fun. I would love the birdwatching part of it also!

I always enjoy places like this where there are displays and so much information about nature and the environment. When we are traveling we try to visit forest service museums and visitor centers. What a neat birdwatching area at this nature center.
