A Fun Cookbook for Bakers: Poh Bakes 100 Greats

POH Bakes 100 Greats CookbookAs an avid home baker myself, I love finding a cookbook all about baking, full of both sweet and savory recipes to inspire me to pull out my mixer and pans. Poh Bakes 100 Greats by Poh Ling Yeow (Murdoch Books) is just that sort of book, and it does not disappoint.

Everything about this book is joyful, including the cover, with Poh’s smiling face, a gorgeous cake, and gold stars twinkling against a cheerful pink background. The cover sets the tone for the recipes, which seem designed to be shared, whether for a simple meal at home (Hero No-Knead Crusty Loaf) or a festive party (Magic Rainbow Piñata Birthday Cake). There’s even a recipe just for the family dogs (Rhino & Tim’s Chicken Liver Treats)!

The recipes cover the complete spectrum from the standard to the unusual. Standards include Angel Food Cake, Pecan Pie, and Red Velvet Cupcakes, all with Poh’s special touches. But she really shines with her unusual selections, such as Marbled Chocolate Salted Caramel Peanut Tart, Upside-Down Cherry Polenta Cake with Balsamic Caramel, and Rosewater Pistachio Meringues. Some of the recipes require multiple and occasionally complicated steps, but Poh’s down-to-earth instructions make them seem completely doable, and her charming introductions to the recipes will have you reaching for your measuring cups.

Speaking of measuring cups, as you thumb through the book, you’ll find that ingredient listings are helpfully provided in units of measurement to suit anyone anywhere in the world, and alternate names for ingredients that go by different names in different countries are provided. Here’s an example from the recipe for Priyant’s Pecan Double Chocolate Brownies: “220 g (8 oz/1 cup) caster (superfine) sugar.”

Oh, I should say that all of the photos are totally drool-worthy, and I wish there was a way for me to stick a fork in there and take a bite.
