Happy: The Journal is actually a follow-up to the author’s book called Happy, in which she shares how she moved through a dark place to find happiness. In Happy: The Journal, she continues to share her own experiences as well as providing space and encouragement for you as you undertake your own journey to happiness.

Although Happy: The Journal is set up like a calendar that begins with January 1, there’s nothing to prevent you from starting on any day of the year. The pages are in pretty pastels, with each month in a different color. For example, July is a cheery yellow, April is a warm pink, and October is a soft green. Watercolor illustrations are sprinkled throughout the book, providing a nice foil for the prose and the blank space. All of this combines to make the book very visually appealing.

Each month begins with a section describing that month’s theme, and each day’s entry space is preceded by a short piece to bring focus or provide a jumping-off point. Each daily entry ends with an icon depicting a face with eyes but no mouth; the idea is that you can complete the face to illustrate how you’re feeling, such as drawing a smile or a frown, or whatever you’re moved to draw.

Cotton stresses that the journal is yours, to complete as you wish. In her introduction, she writes, “If you want to, you can use the pointers and inspiration to help you reflect on how you’re feeling and project you in the direction of clarity and happiness.” Happy: The Journal is a great vehicle to help get you moving in that direction.
