Breakfast has been called “the most important meal of the day,” but it’s elevated beyond that in a new cookbook, Breakfast: The Most Important Book about the Best Meal of the Day, by the Editors of Extra Crispy (Oxmoor House, October 2018). If you love breakfast, this is a book you’ll want to read.

Yes, I do mean read—Breakfast is not just recipes for the day’s first meal. Rather, it’s a collection of stories, essays, infographics, suggestions, explanations, tips, and recipes, all to help you make the most of your breakfast. It’s authored by the editors of Extra Crispy, a website devoted to all things breakfast. These breakfast experts cover everything from coffee to mimosas, eggs to bacon, granola to potatoes, toast to brioche, and much more.
These subjects are covered in depth; there are seven different pieces on coffee alone, ranging from a comparison of grocery store brands of coffee to “10 Coffee Facts You Didn’t Know (But Definitely Should).” I found that the book is generally geared toward younger people or beginning cooks, partly because of the youthful exuberance, language, and outlook of the authors, but also due to the sometimes basic information they convey. But even an experienced cook and breakfast-lover will come away from Breakfast with a refreshed view of that all-important meal, as well as some modern ideas to take breakfast to a whole new level.
Of the recipes included in Breakfast, I know that the first one I’ll be making is the Brown Sugar Waffles, perhaps with the Orange-Ginger Cranberry Compote suggested as an accompaniment. I’ve also got one or two of the Dutch Baby recipes on my must-try list, too. Other tempting recipes include:
• Pretty Basic Muffins, with Some Suggestions for Swap-Ins and -Outs
• The Best Biscuits and Sausage Gravy of Your Life
• Instant Pot Burrito
• Mojito Pancakes
• Persian Kuku Sabzi
• Basic Slow-Cooker Strata
• Velveeta Chex Mix Nacho Dirtbag Casserole
Here at The Classy Chics, we’ll be featuring a fabulous recipe excerpted from Breakfast in the not-too-distant future, so keep an eye out. You won’t want to miss it, for sure.
