Family Visit to the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum

December 5, 2018 by Shelly

Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum in Cape May, New JerseyThe Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum is located at the Cape May Airport in Cape May, New Jersey. The museum is set up in an old airport hangar  and offers you the opportunity to get up close & personal with airplanes, helicopters, fighter jets, U.S. Coast Guard Boats, etc. It’s the type of museum that the entire family would enjoy.

On the day that we visited the kids got to watch a small plane takeoff on the runway before we headed in to see the exhibits. I guess you could say…we arrived just in-time to see it. It was one of their highlights of the day.

It’s a self-guided museum, so once you pay your admission fee…you can move through the exhibits at your own leisurely pace. There is a short “orientation film” that you can elect to watch (lasts about 12-15 minutes) that will give you some of the history on the area and the important part that it played during World War II.

After watching the film we moved into the main exhibition area of the museum and came across some of the old fighter planes which were really cool to see. My husband and granddaughter climbed up some steps and had the opportunity to sit inside one of those old planes which was really cool to see.

As you walk around you’ll notice that all branches of the military are represented in one form or another. We saw army jeeps, navy planes and fighter jets, a U.S. Coast Guard boat and helicopter and so forth. We’re big military supporters, so we really enjoyed seeing them.

In total it took us about 2 hours to go through the museum and check out all of the exhibits. They were moderately busy on the day that we were there, so we could of gotten through quicker if we would of went earlier in the day. It can get a tad “hot” inside the hangar, so I suggest dressing appropriately and wear comfortable shoes for walking.

We visit our local flight museum a few times a year with our grandchildren. They have a fabulous kid space plus seeing the planes and space sections is so fascinating.

We love visiting all kinds of different museums…visit as many that we can locally and when traveling. A great way to entertain yourself and learn about new things in the process.

My family would love to visit here. We recently went to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH. It was really nice too and admission is free.
