Easy Bird Origami – A Fun Origami Project Book for Bird Lovers

Easy Bird Origami: 30 Pre-Printed Bird Models by Tammy YeeThe Japanese art of origami is very popular these days, and we’ve featured several how-to books here at The Classy Chics over the last year (check them out here). Today I’d like to tell you about a fun book of origami projects suitable even for beginners, Easy Bird Origami: 30 Pre-Printed Bird Models by Tammy Yee (Dover Publications, 2017).

The genius of this book is that you don’t have to struggle with overly complicated folds or inscrutable instructions. Each bird is featured on its own removable full-color page, and the heavy-duty paper is preprinted with the folds clearly indicated. Birds are presented either as standing or flying, and the book includes detailed instructions for each position. Also included is the web address for a YouTube video so you can actually watch someone make a standing bird and a flying bird, step by step. Personally, I’m very visually oriented, so having the video to refer to is a lot more helpful to me than just trying to follow the printed directions.

Easy Bird Origami features a nice variety of beautiful birds from around the world. In addition to the origami designs, the book also includes a page describing each bird, with details such as where it’s from and some interesting facts about it. I was pleased to see a few of my familiar favorites like the Northern Cardinal, Black-Capped Chickadee, American Kestrel, and Eastern Bluebird, but I also like the birds from faraway places, like the Common Bullfinch from Europe and Asia, the Flame Bowerbird that inhabits the rainforests of New Guinea, the Sociable Weaver from Africa’s savannas, and New Zealand’s Kakapo. What a fun way to learn about birds!

After the hectic pace of all the end-of-year festivities, I’m looking forward to taking some time with Easy Bird Origami and making the pretty little birds. My plan is to make a mobile featuring my completed paper birds so I can enjoy watching them “fly.” Wish me luck!
