Voting with a Porpoise Children’s Book

Just in time for the important 2018 midterm elections, the voting process is brought to life for children of all ages when a charming underwater community comes together to illustrate its importance in the new children’s book Voting with a Porpoise. A pod of dolphins can’t find enough food in the reef where they have always lived and are faced with an important decision: stay in their long-time home or move on to more fruitful waters. Looking to the group to vote on what their future would hold, the pod’s leader, Finn, doesn’t want Petey to vote because “he’s just a porpoise.” However, when Finn finds himself with a 6-pack ring wrapped around his beak, which Petey helps him remove, he has a change of heart. With Petey’s vote, the pod swims off for a new reef where they happily find plenty of food and a prosperous new life.

It can sometimes be difficult to explain to a child how important voting can be. It’s especially difficult finding appropriate books to help introduce the concept of voting to your children. It was perfect timing for the release of Voting with a Porpoise, (September, 2018) which does a great job at demonstrating not only the concept of voting, but how important it is to vote and let your voice be heard.

For my teacher and librarian friends, I would highly recommend using this title in your lesson plans about voting. At the end of the book, there is a section titled, “Conversation Started and Lesson Ideas” which is a great feature. It suggests ten different ways you can engage your students and get them talking about voting and how important it is. It also offers some information on the similarities and differences between a dolphin and a porpoise…which to me, is an added bonus! So, if you are looking for more titles to add to your lesson plan, classroom or library, then I say, “Go buy this book!”
