Back in the day, I fancied myself an amateur calligrapher, and I really enjoyed being able to create calligraphic items for family and friends. When I heard that there was an updated method for calligraphy, I thought it might be a good chance to resurrect my old hobby. I’m pleased to tell you about a new book for all of us who are interested in learning about this fresh style, Modern Calligraphy: A Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering Hand-Lettering by Lucy Edmonds (Dover Publications, September 2018).

The art of calligraphy is nearly as old as the written word, but styles change over time. Lucy Edmonds is well versed in today’s style and regularly teaches calligraphy workshops at her London stationery boutique, Quill London. Fortunately for the rest of us, she has collected her lessons into Modern Calligraphy so we can all benefit from her expertise. She not only provides instruction and exercises but also includes a wealth of information about calligraphy in general and what makes modern calligraphy what it is. She describes the tools used in modern calligraphy, as well as how to use them properly. The book is also a workbook, since it includes plenty of pages of spaced dots and lines for the beginner to use to practice his or her new skills.
After several chapters on the fundamentals of lettering, putting letters together into words, and putting words together into phrases, Edmonds takes the student further into creative uses of calligraphy, such as brush calligraphy and incorporating color. Her “Putting It into Practice” chapter describes several fun projects including creating beautiful envelopes, wax seals, and chalkboard signage. She even has a helpful FAQ section, with tips and solutions for problems you might not have anticipated, as well as a collection of suppliers and resources for materials and more information.
Modern Calligraphy has a solid place in The Classy Chics’ Holiday Gift Guide, from a couple of different perspectives. Of course, it would make a thoughtful gift for the crafty person on your list, especially if wrapped up with a selection of calligraphy supplies. But it would also make a good gift for yourself, which you could use as a springboard to help you create your own handmade calligraphic gifts.
