Hand-Painted Jack Skellington Seashells for Halloween

For the past year we’ve shared over a dozen hand-painted seashells, clam shells and river rock projects with all of you. The majority of these projects can be made with older children and some “light” adult supervision. With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to feature one more hand-painted seashell design with all of you. If you don’t have access to large clam shells, you can do this design on smooth river rocks too! In addition, you can use regular acrylic craft paints or mix-in some glow-in-the-dark colors too!

Large Clam Shells
Acrylic Craft Paint (White and Black)
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paint Palette
Clear Acrylic Sealer – Glossy Finish
Newspaper and Paper Towels

Lay two sheets of newspaper down on your work surface. We used 6″ to 7″ wide clam shells that we collected from the beach. You’ll want to wash the seashells and let them air dry. They need to be free from debris and completely dry before you begin this project.

Paint the outside of the large clam shell with a coat of white acrylic paint. Let dry for 30 minutes and then apply a second coat of paint. Let dry for 30-45 additional minutes. Using black acrylic paint add the two black eyes, nose and the mouth. Let dry for 30-45 minutes. We found one coat of black paint to be enough, but depending on the brand that you’re using, you may need to add a second coat.

Lay 2-3 sheets of newspaper down on the ground outside. Place your seashells on top. Light spray a coat of clear acrylic sealer over the painted design. Let dry for 30 minutes and then apply a second coat of sealer. Let dry for 3-4 hours or until it’s thoroughly dry and no longer sticky. You can now display your spooky seashells indoors or outdoors to enhance your Halloween decor.

I was wondering if it was glow in the dark! This is really a cute one. Have you tried making chimes out of any of these? This is one that would make a nice seasonal one. You know I bet you could even put these in a seasonal wreath!

  3. Where are you putting all of your finished shells? Have to be a very big shelf. Another cute one.

  4. Every time I think it just can’t get better it does! This is the best shell creation yet Shelly! I am planning on doing this with my daughters leading up to Halloween. Thank you once again for your wonderful website and craft ideas.
