Dauphin County Veteran’s Memorial in Harrisburg Pennsylvania
My husband and I enjoy visiting war and veteran related monuments and memorials. Its one way that we can pay our respects to our military heroes and to honor them, while learning about the history of our country. I think its very important for people to get out there and to honor the memory of our soldiers, past and present.
Harrisburg is the capital city in Pennsylvania and is rich on our country’s history. You’ll find the Civil War Museum in downtown Harrisburg and then a few miles away you’ll find the Dauphin County Veteran’s Memorial which is located across the street from the Zembo Shrine building and beautiful Italian Lake, at Third and Division Street.
It stands 110 feet high, weighs over 600 tons, and was cut from stone taken from the banks of the Susquehanna River. The stone plaque is inscribed: “To the soldiers of Dauphin County who gave their lives for the life of the Union in the suppression of the rebellion 1861-1865. Erected by their fellow citizens.” You’ll have to get up close to the memorial monument if you want to read the inscription.
The monument is located in a beautiful area of the city. Right across the street you’ll find the man-made Italian Lake, the old John Harris High School and across the street sits the Zembo Shrine Temple & Buildings. Right down the street is the old Polyclinic Hospital (now closed).
Does your town or city honor veterans past or present by erecting monuments and/or memorials? Do you enjoy checking them out when you travel?
