Kid’s Craft Project: Perler Melty Beads Children’s Jewelry

August 18, 2018 by Shelly

Looking for a fun craft project to do with the kids? If so, we’ve got one for you today! Little girls can turn these designs into jewelry and little boys can turn them into refrigerator magnets.

If you’ve never worked with Perler Melty Beads before…I recommend that you buy one of their kits. It will have everything that you need to get started. If you already have a kit, you will need to buy some of the Perler Melty Beads in your desired colors, along with miscellaneous jewelry findings.

Please note: You will be using a hot iron when making these projects and I recommend an adult do that particular step.

Kid's Craft Project: Heart Pin - Brooch

Kid’s Craft Project: Heart Pin – Brooch

Square Shaped Peg Board
2 Colors of Perler Melty Beads (Pink and Dark Purple)
Metal Pin Back
All-Purpose Craft Glue

We used a square-shaped peg board and worked in rows…left to right.

Row 1: (skip space), 3 pink beads, (skip space), 3 pink beads.
Row 2: pink bead, 3 purple beads, pink bead, 3 purple beads, pink bead.
Row 3: pink bead, purple bead, 2 pink beads, purple bead, 2 pink beads, purple bead, pink bead.
Row 4: pink bead, purple bead, 5 pink beads, purple bead, pink bead.
Row 5: (skip space), pink bead, purple bead, 3 pink beads, purple bead, pink bead.
Row 6: (skip 2 spaces), pink bead, purple bead, pink bead, purple bead, pink bead.
Row 7: (skip 3 spaces), pink bead, purple bead, pink bead.
Row 8: (skip 4 spaces), pink bead.

Once you have your beaded pattern completed, you’ll lay the protective sheet on top (comes in the kit) and place your hot iron on top. If you don’t have a protective sheet, you can use a sheet of Parchment paper. Sit the hot iron on top and apply gentle pressure, don’t move the iron back & forth. It should take approximately 20 to 30 seconds for the beads to melt and to adhere together. Once done, remove the sheet and let the item cool. Once cool, glue the pin finding on the back. Let dry for 2-3 hours and your new pin is ready to be used.

Kid's Craft Project: Melty Beads Necklace

Kid’s Craft Project: Melty Beads Necklace

Square or Rectangular Shaped Peg Board
Melty Beads in Desired Colors
2 Metal Jump Rings
Metal Necklace Chain with Clasp
Pliers

My granddaughter made a pie-shape or wedge-shape with her design and used 4 different colors of Melty Beads.

Row 1: 12 brown beads.
Row 2: 12 brown beads.
Row 3: yellow bead, 10 brown beads, green bead.
Row 4: (skip space), red bead, 8 brown beads, red bead.
Row 5: (skip 2 spaces), green bead, 6 brown beads, yellow bead.
Row 6: (skip 3 spaces), yellow bead, red bead, green bead, yellow bead, red bead, green bead.

You will follow the previous steps from project #1 to iron and melt your beads. Once they’re melted and your design has cooled, you’ll want to attach your metal jewelry findings.

Have an adult attach a metal jump ring to each side of the pendent using pliers. You will then attach the pre-purchased necklace chain to each jump ring. That’s it, your new necklace is now complete and ready to wear.

Melty beads are such a fun and easy project to have the kids do. It is fairly inexpensive and they can spend so much time on these projects. The heart pin and necklace are very cute.

These are fun and easy to set up and do. My nieces did a huge bunch of hem one year, and I really loved he creativity. I like kids crafts a whole lot, and they made some at their own houses later and made me fridge magnets, which I just love since it makes me smile seeing them.
