The Historic Martin Castle near Lexington Kentucky

August 1, 2018 by Shelly

The Historic Martin Castle near Lexington KentuckyA few months ago we spent a wonderful extended weekend down in beautiful Kentucky. If you’ve never visited the state before…I highly recommend it! Kentucky has a lot to offer and yes…they’re famous for horse racing too!

We were driving out of Lexington and stumbled upon this fantastic castle that was sitting up on the hill. I apologize in advance for the photograph quality…it was storming that day and the sun was getting ready to set.

Locals refer to it as the Martin Castle or the Versailles Castle. It’s a really huge stone castle and it’s surrounded by a black wrought iron fence. We parked right outside the gate and I quickly snapped two photos before I got drenched by the rain. I really wish that we had seen it earlier and during better weather.

Anyway, once we got home from our trip I got online and did a little research. If you’re interested in learning more about the MARTIN CASTLE – You can find some information about it over on wikipedia. From what I read, it was built in 1969 but was NOT finished at that time.

I found another website online and they call it The Kentucky Castle as it has been recently turned into a remodeled boutique hotel, spa, restaurant, business conference center, wedding venue, etc. You can visit The Kentucky Castle to learn more about that. We thought it looked pretty cool and wanted to share the only 2 photos that we got that day.

We’re big fans of street art and wall murals and during that same day we stumbled on this very cool water tower in Kentucky which features a Kentucky Derby painted mural on it. Isn’t it cool? We thought so! It says “Welcome to Versailles” on the side of it.

How amazing to come upon something like this. It would be so neat to visit and stay at the Kentucky Castle. What a unique experience.

I have alway loved the east coast. So rich in history. I am kind of surprised it wa built (the castle) so late. So many of those large structures were built much sooner. It would be interesting to see though and to see just how big it is!

I live in Cynthiana, KY, not far from the castle. It pops up on local news programs now and then as an oddity in KY, lol. I remember passing it as a kid and someone would always point out ‘the castle.’ Oh, and for those who think it’s weird to find a Versailles in KY, we pronounce it VURR-SALES not VER-SIGH, like the French, lolol. Hey this is Kentucky. (We also have a Paris, London, Glasgow and Somerset in KY!) Am I sounding like a tourism director??

I didn’t know there was a castle in Kentucky. The water tower art is lovely.
