Halloween Craft Project: Painted Black Spider Seashells

Are you ready for another easy-to-do Halloween craft project? Of course you are! My granddaughter and I whipped up these cute black spiders by using some of our larger clam shells that we collected from the beach. You’ll only need a few basic craft supplies to make them and you can make several in one weekend.

If you plan on displaying them outside, I recommend that you seal them with a few coats of clear acrylic spray sealer and display them on your front porch or back deck where they’ll be a little protected from the elements (due to the pipe cleaner legs).

You can find the rest of our painted seashell designs right here on the blog!!!

Halloween Craft Project: Painted Black Spider Seashells

Large Clam Shells
Black Acrylic Paint
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paper Towels
2 Black Pipe Cleaners
Scissors
2 Wiggle Eyes
Fast-Drying Clear Craft Glue
E6000 Adhesive Glue
Newspaper
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer

Lay newspaper down onto your work surface.

Paint the outside of your large clam shell with 2 coats of black acrylic paint. Let dry. While your paint is drying, cut each of the pipe cleaners into thirds. You’ll need a total of 6 pieces to form the spider’s 6 legs.

Once the paint is dry, flip the clam shell over. Use the E6000 glue adhesive to glue on each of the legs in the positions as shown in the photographs. This is a very strong adhesive, so an adult should do this part. It will take 3-5 hours for the adhesive to dry.

Lay newspaper down outside. Spray the painted side with 2 light coats of the clear acrylic spray sealer. I like to use the glossy finish, but it also comes in matte too. If you do this on a sunny, warm day, they should be completely dry in an hour or so.

Bring the black spiders back inside and glue on the wiggle eyes with regular fast-drying, clear craft glue. Let dry.

Your new black spider seashells are now ready to be displayed. You can place them outside (I recommend a covered porch or deck) or use them to decorate the inside of your home. They look super cute displayed on a table, shelf or desk.

You manage to make such cute crafts with your seashells. I love this spider. I think that your e-book will be great.

  2. I was wondering when we’d see another seashell craft. This is very cute.

    • Oh trust me, you’ll be seeing them almost weekly. With that said, we’ve been working on a lot of non-seashell crafts too that we’ll be sharing.

I never would’ve thought of using a seashell for that but it totally works! That’s a really good idea.

I really think these shell projects are so neat. I am amazed how creative you all have gotten. This one would be fun to hang up on the porch and have ‘spiders’ dangling !

    • We made a total of 6 of them in various sizes. I’m going to display them on our front porch in a group with one of those fake spider webs and have it look like they’re ready to attack you as you come up onto the porch. I think the spiders look best displayed in a group and made from different sized clam shells. An attacking family of spiders.

  5. These seashell crafts keep getting better and better! This spider one is the best one yet. This would be a great craft for the kids and would make them excited for Halloween.

    • Thank you Alice! We’re doing a slew of seashell animals that we’ll be featuring over the next couple of months. Waiting until you see all of the Halloween, Thanksgiving & Christmas designs that we made & we’ll be sharing here on the blog!!!

  6. This one is super cute and something that I have never ever seen before. Shelly, you should submit all of your seashell craft posts and pictures to a publisher and have your crafts made into a book. You have some great ideas and I always enjoy these posts.

    Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

    • Hi Heather, I’m working on an e-book with all of my seashell craft designs. I’m hoping to release it in Spring 2019.
