To celebrate the release of this new protein + matcha product line, Naked Nutrition is working with The ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s Team Nanci initiative to raise funds for its programs supporting people and families affected by ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). For the details of this partnership, check out Naked Nutrition’s press release. People with ALS often cannot eat solid foods, so products like the matcha protein powders are critical for them, not only for getting essential nutrients but for making their smoothies and other non-solid foods taste good, too.
Naked Nutrition sent me both the Naked Whey + Matcha and Naked Pea + Matcha to review. I’ve seen many recipes using matcha over the last few years as it’s increased in popularity but hadn’t tried it for myself yet. These formulations, with their serious protein and nutrition boost, are a great incentive to jump on the matcha train.
To see if I could detect any differences between the two varieties, I made two identical smoothies, then added Naked Whey + Matcha to one and Naked Pea + Matcha to the other. So as not to mask the matcha’s flavor, I used simple ingredients: A banana, a few spoonfuls of plain yogurt, a pinch of salt, a squeeze of honey, and some milk. There was a minor color difference between the two smoothies, with the Whey a bit greener and the Pea a bit yellower, but if they weren’t side by side, I doubt I would notice. Both were good, with the matcha adding a savory note. To me, the Whey + Matcha smoothie was silky, whereas I could still detect a powdery but not quite grainy texture in the Pea + Matcha smoothie. The instructions for both types recommend using a blender for 20-30 seconds when mixing them with liquids, or for 25-30 seconds when using a shaker bottle. I used my Magic Bullet for the suggested 20-30 seconds, plus an extra go-round for the Pea + Matcha smoothie. Now I wonder if using a more powerful blender might have eliminated the powdery texture of the Pea + Matcha smoothie, but that’s an experiment for another day.
