Kid’s Craft Project – Painted Patriotic Wood Firecrackers

It’s not often that we feature kid’s craft projects that fit within a Patriotic holiday theme. However, we’re trying to change that and include craft projects for those holidays too! This project is pretty easy-to-make and only requires a few craft supplies, adult supervision is recommended.

Kid’s Craft Project – Painted Patriotic Wood Firecrackers

Pine Wood Blocks
Fine Sandpaper
Drill with 3/16″ Drill Bit
Acrylic Paint – Red, White and Blue
Metallic Pine Cleaners – Red, Silver and Blue
All-Purpose Craft Glue
Scissors
Paint Brush, Water Dish, Paint Palette
Newspaper and Paper Towels
Clear Acrylic Spray Sealer

We used miscellaneous sized scraps of pine wood. You want them to be in rectangular or square shapes. You can make them any length that you would like. Use fine sandpaper to smooth down the edges and all surfaces of the wood.

Have the kids use the acrylic paint to decorate the wood block. The Princess made a color-block pattern of red, white and blue which I think looks nice. She used two coats of acrylic paint, allowing the paint to dry for 30 minutes before applying the second coat. Let dry for 2 hours, so that paint sets.

An adult should drill the hole in the top of the wooden block. It doesn’t need to be a deep hole, just deep enough to insert three pipe cleaners down inside it.  Squirt some all-purpose craft glue down into the hole. Insert the three pipe cleaners. The length will depend on the size of your wood block. Let the glue dry and then fan out the pipe cleaners to resemble the top of the fire cracker.

Once everything is dry…lay newspaper down outside. Spray each fire cracker with two coats of acrylic spray sealer and let dry overnight. The painted surface is now protected and you can use them to decorate inside or outside your home.

I think they look best when grouped together in sets of three and with each one being a different height. In addition, I think the rectangular shape works best, but square shapes will work too!

  3. These are cute and would be fun for the kids to make. I like the holiday themes because I like having my grandkids be involved in the set up for a gathering by decorating so this is perfect.
