DIY Craft Project Tic-Tac-Toe Board Game

How many of you enjoy the old classic games that we used to play as kids? I know that I do! Well, I wanted to share my love for some of those old classic games with my grandchildren and decided to make my own Tic-Tac-Toe board game.

What’s really unique about this craft project is that you can use either smooth river rocks or medium-sized seashells for the playing pieces. The rest of the items I purchased at my local craft supply store and in total I spent LESS than $4.00 to make the entire game set! Since I’m a beach-lover, I painted the set in white with metallic purple and metallic turquoise accenting colors.

Line your work surface with newspaper.

Game Board: I painted the front and back of the wooden game board with 2 coats of white acrylic paint. I accented the edge of the game board with metallic turquoise colored acrylic paint. Let dry.

I measured the game board with a ruler and then divided that number into thirds. I drew my lines on with pencil and then painted the lines with the purple metallic paint. You need a total of 9 squares for the game. Let dry.

Playing Pieces: I selected 8 river rocks that were the perfect size to fit within the spaces on the board. You’ll want to paint the river rocks with 2 coats of paint. You’ll need 4 rocks in each of your 2 selected colors. Let dry.

Wooden Tote: This tote is the perfect size to hold all of the river rocks (playing pieces), so I opted to paint the entire wooden tote with the purple metallic paint. Once dry, you can decorate the front with whatever you choose. I selected a small-sized scallop seashell and adhered it to the front of the tote using E6000 adhesive glue.

Finishing: Take everything outside and lay it onto newspaper. Use the spray acrylic clear sealer to give everything a good coating. Let dry. Flip your pieces over and spray the other side. Let dry thoroughly.

You manage to find fun projects or crafts for people to make. I like the colors and I think kids would enjoy helping to make this game set.

My granddaughter likes to create her own games so this would be such a neat way for her to personalize a game with her own style. What a great and fun idea.

  3. This is such a clever and fun idea. I so want to make this one this summer thanks for sharing another wonderful craft idea.

    • It turned out a lot nicer than what I thought it would be. We’re working on another version that utilizes seashells as the game pieces. I think they would make great gifts and easy to tote around in the car when traveling or going on vacation.

This looks like so much fun for the girls to make and then play. It is something they can make quickly so they can take home with them after they come for a visit. Thank you for the idea.

Very clever. I like the colors first of all. This is nice because I have always loved the smooth river rocks. This game too could be modified a bt and be left outside without fear of it ruining. A nice game to while away a summer day or one inside when the weather isnt great.

  6. Such a fun and easy idea! Great non-technological summer activity for all ages, too.
