A Family Visit to the Doo Wop Museum in Wildwood

May 23, 2018 by Shelly

Doo Wop Museum in Wildwood New JerseyWhen it comes to family-friendly, educational activities, there is nothing better than visiting a museum. You can learn a lot by visiting a museum and you can usually find a lot of fun activities to do while you’re there. Another added bonus is that a lot of museums around the country are FREE to visit or have affordable admission fees.

The Doo Wop Museum is located in Wildwood, New Jersey and is FREE to visit. We’ve been to the museum a few times over the past couple of years, but it was our first time taking our granddaughter and my mother along with us. It’s a fun place to visit and you can learn all kinds of things about the 1950’s and 1960’s era.

Outside of the building you’ll find some old Doo Wop style neon lights that used to be signs at local area hotels. All of the ones that we saw are no longer there…sadly, those hotels were tore down for more modern ones and the museum was able to preserve those neon signs for future generations to enjoy.

Once inside you’ll find all kinds of exhibits and displays. You an get a glimpse at the era’s kitchen appliances, furniture for the home, music and entertainment items, old bicycles are on display, books, etc. There is a mini film that you can watch on Wildwood and how it played an important part in the Doo Wop era. My mom spotted a poodle skirt and cardigan sweater on display and immediately started telling us that when she was a teenager…they were the hottest fashion items going in her high school.

As someone who enjoys cooking and baking, I can’t even imagine how hard it must of been to cook and bake using those old 1950’s and 1960’s kitchen appliances. Sure, at the time they were modern and the best things going, but looking back and comparing them to the kitchen appliances we have today…well, I imagine that cooking and baking for a family wasn’t an easy task. Just Saying.

We spent a good hour at the Doo Wop Museum in Wildwood, New Jersey and really enjoyed our visit. If you’re going to be in the area, you’ll find it right across the street to the Wildwoods Convention Center. A definite must-see and must-do when visiting Stone Harbor, Cape May, Avalon or Wildwood in New Jersey.

I was a child in the 50 & 60s.I remember the hotels since we went to Wildwood Crest every other year when I was young, I must stop and see this museum. I’m sure it would put a big smile on my face.

I agree that this would be a fun museum to visit. I think that kids could learn about the past in a fun way and the adults could reminisce.

I think this would make me feel that I was back in my childhood home. I still have some dishes that were passed down to me from the 1960’s. You find the best places to visit.

I owned a poodle skirt that my mother made me. This would be a walk down memory lane.

This would be a fun place to see. This looks like one of those places you would now and again find in small owns or without saying my age along route 66 and such. I am glad to see some preserving these hings. The 50’s and 60’s werent that long ago, and already so much has disappeared it was certainly a time of changes.

I would like that museum. I like seeing older things again. We have a hardware store here that looks like the 60’s. I love to look in it.
