Nurturing Your Hair: Avoid These 5 Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss is extremely common and can have multiple causes. It can be temporary or permanent, resulting in thinning or full baldness.

Some of these causes are medical and may require the treatment of a physician. Some causes are preventable, however, if you know what to watch for.

Regardless of the reason behind your hair loss, it can be just as stressful for men as for women. Luckily, some of the reasons behind losing your hair are easy to avoid. There are five main causes of hair loss that you should never do so that you can keep your hair healthy, shiny and full.

1. Emotional Stress

Although it is impossible to completely avoid stress in your life, allowing it to continue for too long can result in substantial hair loss. Even though your thinning hair is not usually permanent in this case, the stress of losing your hair can increase your anxiety and cause a vicious spiraling cycle.

Instead of allowing stress to dictate the health of your hair, try to catch it before it gets out of control. Anti-stress therapies such as meditation, motivational apps, talk therapy, and natural supplements can help alleviate some of your concerns or assist you in handling them easier.

2. Sudden and Dramatic Weight Loss

For many people, a large drop in the number on the scale is a dream come true, but this can come with a hefty price tag.

Sudden weight loss, even when done in a healthy way, can be hard on your body. It basically shocks your body’s systems and the shifting of vitamins and minerals can get confused. This often results in a dramatic thinning of your hair to match the dramatic loss of weight.

The good news is that as your body gets used to its new size, it will straighten out and your hair will grow back over time.

3. Overuse of Styling Products

How much is too much when we are making our hair look gorgeous? Keeping unnatural products out of your hair is the rule of thumb – avoid chemicals that can cause your hair to burn, high heats, and hot oil therapies.

This is an area you want to pay careful attention to if you are a regular to the salon, hair dryer, or harmful products, since there is no guarantee that once you lose your hair it will come back. Most of these damages occur to the root at the hair follicle, which can be permanent.

4. Tight Hairstyles

Cute styles like corn rows, mini braids, strict buns, and other tight looks might be stylish, but they are not healthy for your hair. Avoid them whenever possible and find an alternative style that isn’t so rough on your scalp.

5. Shampoo

Yes, you read right. Your shampoo might be causing your hair to fall out. Read your bottle carefully. If it contains minimal cleansers but a high concentration of oil, it isn’t healthy for your hair, even if it says “all-natural.” However, there are many safe to use hair loss shampoo options if you do find yourself losing your hair.

Keep Your Hair Healthy and Beautiful

Avoiding these five potentially disastrous hair-loss things can help you maintain your hair and keep it shiny, strong and healthy for years to come. If you see your hair thinning or falling out in increasing numbers, try a hair loss shampoo or seek advice from your medical physician, but don’t stress – there are lots of ways to help fix it!

    I always worry about my hair thinning. My Mom and all of her sisters had a big problem as they got older. Im pretty good with everything you listed except STRESS. Maybe I can bypass genetics.

    My hair is short and I swim 3 times a week. I use a good shampoo and never use styling products.

    This was so educational to read and I am going to have to save this one. I am doing several things wrong and I need to stop. I think I lose a normal amount of hair per day but you can never be too careful.
