1. When you need cash at night, ONLY use machines that are in well-lit and safe areas. If possible, go through a bank’s drive-thru to use the ATM machine there, instead of getting out of your car.
2. Never give out your PIN (personal identification number) to anyone and don’t write it down! It’s important to memorize it and don’t insert your PIN into any machine when someone is directly watching you.
3. Receive a new and updated card? Make sure you put your signature on the back of the card immediately and double-check all of the information on the card. Shred and dispose of old cards immediately. Don’t let them lie around or the kids play with them!
4. Always make sure you review your transaction receipt immediately after any transaction and keep all of your receipts for future reference. If there are any discrepancies, take care of those immediately. Do not toss transaction receipts into the public trash. All receipts need to be shredded and disposed of at home.
5. After a transaction at a terminal or at a place of business, always make sure you leave with your card! Matter of fact, get into the habit of placing the card, cash and/or receipts in your pocket, wallet or handbag before walking away. You never want to walk around with cash and cards in your hand.
6. Misplace your card? Stolen card? You want to report these as soon as you realize your card is gone!
7. Be careful when you shop online! While most retail businesses online are safe to shop at…you always want to double check to make sure you are logged into the retailer’s site securely and make sure you log out completely. Never give out your account numbers or PIN in email or on an un-secure web form.
Bonus Tip: Invest in a RFID blocking wallet and handbag! The RFID protection will protect you against pick-pocketing thieves! These type’s of products are inexpensive and well-worth your investment!!!

These are all good tips. They work with any credit card as well as debit cards.
I keep saying that I want to get a debit card. I’ve always been a bit afraid of them. But I watch my daughter use hers and its so convenient.
About two months ago I purchased a new wallet with the RFID protection. I never use my debit card online I am way too scared to do that and I almost never use it at a walk up ATM. I have been seeing on the news here that the thieves put somekind of a reader on a lot of those ATM machines and they are getting harder and hard to spot them. When I want cash I usually get cash back at the register and I try only shop at stores that allow you to do that. I really enjoyed reading your post and I thank you for doing it. It seems like a constant battle to keep your money and private information safe.
I am ‘old school’ and still use a checking account. There are several reasons why, and some you mentioned above are there. I have a card for our bank but it is so outdated, I dont even think it works. The one thing I would add is while shopping online, use a credit rather than debit. Your credit card often has more protection than your bank will ever give you! Good tips I am just obsessive I guess and dont use a debit, I even balance every time I write a check!
Very good tips that I try to remember. I am always telling my adult kids to make sure they check the transaction receipt immediately because it only takes a few seconds instead of having to track information down months later. Hope they do it.
Another tip I would add is use cash at restaurants where the waiter/waitress walks away to swipe your card. You are handing your card to a total stranger. A person could easily take a photo of the front and back of your card with their phone. The person could either use your card or sell the info to people online. My debit card was used last year by someone in another state for two separate transactions. The teller at my bank said it was a random incident and told me about scams like I mentioned above and skimmers at gas pumps. Yes, I now wiggle the credit card slot and place my hand above the keypad to hide my zip code. Can’t be too careful!
These are great tips. I really don’t like using credit cards because of the danger.
All great tips! Better safe than sorry!
