Homemade Spicy Barbecue Sauce Recipe

From late March through late October we use our barbecue grill at least twice a week. I will sometimes use it to make Shelly and I a quick lunch, but most of the time I use it when it comes to preparing our dinner. One of the things I enjoy preparing on the grill is chicken. It cooks up pretty fast and I can use just about any marinade, rub or seasoning to give it flavor.

If you’re looking for a semi-spicy, but not overly-spicy barbecue sauce recipe, you will enjoy the one below. My wife messes with using a marinading container, but I simply pour the cooled sauce into a large plastic zipper freezer bag along with the chicken, seal the bag and toss it into the refrigerator. I’m a guy and I don’t like dirtying up more dishes than I have to.

Homemade Spicy Barbecue Sauce Recipe

2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 small onion, diced
8-ounce can tomato sauce
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 teaspoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

In a medium saucepan heat up the olive oil with the diced onion. Simmer over medium heat until the diced onion is fork-tender. Add in the remaining ingredients and bring to a boiling over medium-to-high heat. Boil the mixture for 2 minutes and remove from heat.

Use the barbecue sauce as a marinade for chicken or use it to baste chicken that you’re going to toss on the grill. If using it as a marinade, pour the sauce into a marinading container, place chicken pieces inside, coat them in the sauce and refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Remove from refrigerator and bake or grill the chicken until done.
