Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking Season 5 on DVD

March 8, 2018 by A Bailey

Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking Season 5 on DVDIf you’re a fan of the cooking shows on PBS, you’re probably familiar with the program Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking. I’ve enjoyed this show for years, with its beautiful locations and sumptuous feasts. Season 5 premiered in September 2017, and the DVD and digital download featuring all of the episodes from this latest season is available as of March 6th, 2018.

Each episode generally follows the same format. The host describes the area highlighted in that episode and meets with local chefs, farmers, artisans, and other experts. After determining their menu, the host and guest chefs create a feast at the chosen location using fresh, local ingredients. The final segment is from the Fine Cooking Test Kitchen, demonstrating how to make one of the components of the episode’s feast in a home kitchen.

The locales featured in Moveable Feast Season 5 range from the exotic to the familiar, including different regions in France and Italy, Puerto Rico (filmed before the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria), and several cities right here in the continental United States. You’ll see the mustard fields of Dijon in France, a sustainable mussel farm in Washington, Italy’s famous Mercato di Mezzo market, and even a bee being born at an apiary in New Mexico. If you’re like me, you’ll love getting an insider’s look at places near and far that you’ve only dreamed of, and all from the comfort of your own home.

Although the locations are a major part of the appeal of Moveable Feast, it really comes down to the gorgeous food and the people who produce and prepare it. The recipes are, for the most part, pretty high-end, employing ingredients and techniques beyond the reach of most of us (well, me, anyway). To me, that only adds to the vicarious enjoyment I get while watching the hosts go from farm to kitchen to table, and from learning about the talented chefs, growers, and artisans who make it all happen.

And oh, the feasts! The feasts featured in this series are almost unimaginably fabulous. The meals are beautifully presented and well appreciated, as evidenced by the smiles on the faces of the attendees. The settings include a countryside restaurant in Provence, a Washington vineyard, an Italian estate, a cooking studio in New Mexico, and more, with each location perfect for its local menu.
