Love Colored Pencils Instructional BookAdult coloring books are very popular lately, but what if you want to turn simple coloring into a more realistic art form? Vivian Wong is here to help, with her new interactive book called Love Colored Pencils from Quarto Publishing.

Starting with descriptions of tools and materials then moving into techniques, Wong’s lessons are suitable for beginners who want to learn to use colored pencils, but even people with some experience will benefit, too. She describes a technique and then illustrates it, and the student can try the technique on the provided exercise pages. The tutorials progress from basic skills such as pressure, crosshatching, and blending, up to more advanced skills such as coloring different skin tones, feathers, fur, and flowers.

To me, though, the most helpful lessons are the ones about color, color mixing, and tone. Here, Wong’s clear, descriptive writing, paired with her illustrations, give me both the verbal and visual teaching I need to fully understand what I’m working on. Having a dedicated place to do the lessons right in the book is the perfect way for me to experiment for myself and see how it really works.

It has been years (well, decades, really, if I’m being perfectly honest) since I’ve had a set of colored pencils, and going through the exercises in Love Colored Pencils has made me feel like a kid again. It’s such fun! It’s not always easy and does take some practice, but it’s very satisfying to find my skills improving. And as anyone who has jumped on the adult coloring bandwagon knows, it’s a great way to relax and unwind while letting your creative juices flow.

Love Colored Pencils is educational, inspirational, and fun, all rolled into one book. Even before I broke out my colored pencils, I enjoyed flipping through the book, reading tips on how to use color to make a drawing more realistic, and looking at the progression of a picture from outline to completion.
