How many of you love using those name-brand fabric softener crystals that you toss into the washing machine to make your laundry (clothes) softer? I admit, I used to be a HUGE user of those Purex Fabric Softener Crystals, until I started making my own. Yes, my own!
If you’ve ever bought them, you already know that they can be expensive, especially when they’re not on sale. With that said, I’ve always enjoyed using them because they work and they made my laundry smell good. Well, I now make my own and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Here is how I make my own!
DIY Homemade Laundry Fabric Softener Crystals
1 cup of Sea Salt
1 cup of Epsom Salt
Essential Oil
I have an old plastic bowl that I use when mixing together things like this. A bowl that I never use for food storage. In that bowl you’ll want to mix together 1 cup of Sea Salt, 1 cup of Epsom Salt and 15 drops of your favorite Essential Oil. Depending on my mood, I change up the Essential Oil. I will use lemon, orange or lavender Essential Oils…depending on my mood at the time. You’ll want to mix everything up until well-combined.
Storage: I like to store my homemade crystals fabric softener in glass mason jars up on a shelf in my laundry room. To keep your crystals from clumping, always place a lid on top of your mason jar to keep air and moisture out.
To Use: I use a plastic 1 tablespoon coffee scoop. I will add 1 to 3 tablespoons per wash load.
Additional Tips: You can purchase Epsom Salt and Sea Salt at your local Dollar Discount (type) of store. I buy my Essential Oils at my local craft store and I also order them from Amazon online. Next, if you’re using chunky salts to mix up your recipe and want a more “finer” salt…you can toss the salts in your blender. Just blend for 3-5 seconds. You don’t want it to be a fine power…but a “salt-like” consistency. Don’t have glass mason jars? Save your empty & clean spaghetti sauce jars and mayonnaise jars and use them for store. You’ll want to keep this out of the reach of children and pets too!!!

As you can see, it’s really easy to make your own Homemade Laundry Fabric Softener Crystals and it’s certainly a LOT cheaper to make your own than to buy those store-bought versions. As an added bonus, you can use whatever scents/fragrances that you personally like, instead of being limited to what’s on a store’s shelf. Yay!!!
I really like thi idea and am going to make it. I have everything I need on hand. I love the fabric softener add on and his would be much easier. Goodness knows I have bunches of mason jars, I use them all he time. I like the idea of making your own, and I know they sell he finer sea salts at the dollar store here.
I will be sharing my homemade laundry detergent recipes in the coming weeks too. I have one to make powdered laundry detergent and one to make a liquid laundry detergent. Look for those on the blog soon!
It seems like I am always on the hunt to find products that make my laundry smell extra good and you are so right the crystals in the store are too expensive. I have a bunch of essential oils and now I want to try this recipe thank you for sharing this one and have a nice Sunday.
I am going to try this. Thanks so much for posting.
What a great idea! I love the crystals but they are expensive and I do wonder about exactly what is in them. I’m mixing up a batch of grapefruit today!
I change up my fragrances all of the time depending on my mood and the time of the season. Right now I’ve been enjoying citrus fragrance of lemon & lime.
I make these for baths but never knew you can use it for the washer. So, I just put this in with the detergent?
Yes! I like to toss mine in on the last water-fill cycle aka the rinse cycle but you can toss it in with the laundry detergent too.
That is wonderful! I do like the Purex crystals with lavender. So now I can just whip up a jar of this with the lavender essential oils that I always have. I also have the Epson salts that I use for making bath salts as gifts. I will have to buy the sea salt, but that’s inexpensive. Thank you so much for this recipe.
It’s a LOT cheaper to make your own plus you can make whatever scent/fragrances that you like. I like my crystals in a “fine” consistency so I run them thru my old crafting blender. The sea salt and epsom salt I pick up at my local dollar-type of store.
