Once you have this figured out, you are all set to arrange the perfect itinerary for your visit. You can use these five tips to make sure that the itinerary you set matches with your interests:
1. Define the area that you would like to visit: Costa Rica isn’t a big country but, it has a lot of different areas to visit and things to see. These include different ecosystems, climate, and geography, so, it is very important that you decide which area you prefer in advance. Take this into consideration before purchasing your plane tickets, as there are two main airports you can fly into, depending on the area you want to be located. There are also many small airports around the country, so getting around is a breeze.
2. Fly in thru the Liberia airport: The International airport of Liberia is located in the north of the country and it gives you easy access to the west coast and the north side of the country. If you are willing to visit the Pacific beaches in the north or go to Arenal, this airport is your best option. The beaches are not the most beautiful here but the scenery is amazing.
3. Arrive thru San Jose airport: The international airport of San Jose, allows access to the east coast and south side of the country. From here you can have a nice drive to areas like Limon on the east coast or Jaco on the west. San Jose is also the capital of the country but there is not much to see in the city and it is rather unsafe. Most people decide to rent a car at the airport and continue immediately on to their next destination.
4. Choose your method of transportation: One of the most expensive things in Costa Rica is the transportation from one town to another. Generally speaking, moving from one point to the other requires at least 1.5 hrs of driving, so paying for these services can take a good portion of your vacation budget. If you are not afraid of driving, you can rent a car and save A LOT of money. You just have to be sure you have a GPS and rent a 4×4, so you don’t have any problems when you climb the mountainous roads. It is quite an adventure but definitely it worth the money saving if you are on a budget!
5. Pick your activities carefully: Once you decide which part of Costa Rica you will be visiting, you can choose the activities most suitable for your trip.
