3 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe This Winter

January 15, 2018 by Sam H.

3 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe This WinterNow that the last leaves have fallen off of trees, and the official start of winter is just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can keep your family safe from the unique hazards that winter brings. Often these hazards are less obvious than summer hazards such as sunburns, drowning in a swimming pool, or heat exhaustion. Therefore, it is important to carefully identify the potential hazards that exist around your home, so you can provide the proper remedies before they have a chance to become a problem.

Safe from Breakdowns

Breaking down on the side of the road during the winter is a terrible experience that no one should have to have. This is why many roads are covered by a salt gritter, to avoid car accidents occurring as a result of ice or snow. In order to keep your family from experiencing this major inconvenience, not to mention safety hazard, make sure all your cars are ready to take on the challenges of winter driving.

Have all the critical components such as the battery, fluids, and tires checked to ensure they won’t let you or your family down when it matters most. In addition, keep an emergency kit in the car that includes a blanket, so if their car does break down, they’ll be able to stay safe and warm.

3 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe This Winter

Safe from Falls

Say the words “black ice” to anyone who lives in a region that experiences cold weather, and you’ll see a concerned expression come on their face. This invisible hazard can cause some extremely painful, and potentially quite harmful, slips and falls, here, there, and everywhere. Not to mention that any time snow or ice is on a walkway, a great potential for slips and falls exists, no matter how experienced you are with walking on a slippery surface.

In order to prevent these dangerous situations, snow melting mats are a great investment that work for you all winter long. Snow melting mats (like the ones found here) are simply mats that go over your sidewalk or driveway and use radiant heating to melt any frozen precipitation on contact. By preventing any accumulation of potentially hazardous precipitation, you ensure that your family and friends have a smooth, safe surface to walk on as they enter your home. Plus, these mats eliminate having to do any shoveling, which is reason enough to use them, even apart from their safety benefits.

Safe from Fire

Keeping your family comfortable in the winter requires producing a lot of heat in one way or another. Producing this heat produces potentially hazardous situations that must be taken into account in order to ensure your family’s prolonged safety. Consider fireplaces that may be at risk for a chimney fire, space heaters that may be too close to flammable materials, or HVAC systems which may be in desperate need of repair or replacement. Addressing the hazards that exist in your situation will ensure you have peace-of-mind even as your family stays happy and comfortable.

Home Sweet Home

Though winter hazards can be difficult to identify, the effort involved is completely worth it when you consider the excessive benefits. If you’re able to keep your family from even a bit of pain or discomfort, then all your effort will have paid off. Just stay patient, keep the goal in mind, and before you know it, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy all the beauty that winter has to offer.

This is the first time I have heard of these snow melting mats. They sound like a good investment for those who have a lot of black ice.

If I lived in a place that got black ice very often I’d invest in those heat mats. I watched their video of people slip slidin’ away. OUCH!
